WoW The War Within Demonology Warlock is one of the iconic classes in the game. In this WoW Demonology Warlock Guide, our team wants to tell you all we know about this class specialization: rotation, changes, hero talents, builds, and more. Hope we find this article interesting and helpful, and if so, we also suggest reading our Gold Farming Guide.
Demonology Warlock Overview
WoW Demonology Warlock DPS is an adaptable spec who can summon waves of minions fighting on your side while you generate resources in between. This specialization has an efficient and fast operation once the learning curve is overcome. Demonology Warlocks are especially strong in encounters that have stable mobility rather than helter-skelter movement.
One significant advantage of Demonology spec is that they bring Demonic Gateway that can transport your entire group 40 yards forward.
Demonology Warlock in WoW presents itself as the numerically better Warlock specialization, offering competitive single target and AoE with a new tier set offering a fun optimization angle in multitarget while retaining the spec flavor. The rework has been successful at what it intended to accomplish, as the spec is now in a healthier state in terms of both the damage profile and the resources flow, having essentially eliminated the extreme but niche cases where resources could be pooled for very remarkable burst occasions.
Demonology Warlock Strengths and Weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| ✅Survivability; | ⛔️Lack immunity; |
| ✅Variable talent options; | ⛔️Ramp-up DPS mechanic; |
| ✅Soulstone and Demonic Gateway. | ⛔️Low-Burst DPS in most situations. |
Demonology Warlock Season 3 Changes
In Patch 11.2, Demonology Warlock is one of those classes that received only a few, but very positive changes. In a nutshell, a lion’s share of spells gained damage increase, e.g., Wicked Cleave, Chaos Salvo, Shadow Bolt, Summon Demonic Tyrant, and others. The playstyle of the Demonology spec in The War Within Season 3 remains the same.
Demonology Warlock Season 2 Changes
Demonology Warlock in TWW Season 2 received minor updates. In Patch 11.1 for Demonology Warlock there were no changes to specialization abilities, but talent adjustments were introduced. Additionally, WoW TWW Season 2 will feature a new Liberation of Undermine raid, allowing Demonology Warlocks to obtain a new Spliced Fiendtrader’s Influence tier set.
Demonology Specialization Ability Changes
Demonology Warlock in Patch 11.1 did not receive any changes to specialization abilities.
Demonology Warlock Talent Changes
In Patch 11.1 some talents for Demonology Warlock were adjusted.
- Demonic Calling — now has a 20% chance to make your next Call Dreadstalkers cost 2 fewer Soul Shards and have no cast time (was 10%).
- Doom — Consuming a Demonic Core no longer reduces the duration of Doom. The duration of Doom is now reduced by 1 second per Soul Shard spent on Hand of Gul’dan.
- Doom Eternal — When Doom expires, you have a 30% chance to generate a Demonic Core.
Demonology Warlock Hero Talents Changes
Demonology Warlock did not receive any changes to Hero Talents in Patch 11.1.
Demonology Warlock Changes in The War Within
In The War Within you will not face any significant changes to our gameplay. Yet, WoW The War Within Demonology Warlock talents have seen some rework. The Season 1 Tier Set bonus was reworked, and now it grants Shadow Bolt improvements.
- Summon Dreadstalkers now can generate a Demonic Core when fading away.
- Rune of Shadows is a new talent that scales our Shadow Bolt damage.
- Summon Demonic Tyrant is now a 1-minute cooldown baseline.
- Demonic Circle is no longer baseline.
- Demonic Tactics is a new output node.
- Nether Portal and its relative nodes Ner’zhul’s Volition and Gul’dan’s Ambition are removed.
Also, with the newly introduced Hero Talent Tree, it feels fresher and versatile than ever. And the Warbands feature is now on top of everything, as it’s the most useful tool that has been added in this expansion. If you want to start transferring your resources between your alts, share reputation and warbound gear without any extra addons, ask for the Warband Bank unlock from our team, and enjoy it.
Demonology Warlock Hero Talents
Demonology Warlock got Diabolist and Soul Harvester Hero Trees. These two new WoW Demonology Warlock talent trees bring lots of fun to the gameplay, so let’s see what talents we can find in each of them:
Basics of Demonology Warlock Gameplay
Playing Demonology Warlock means that you should continuously summon demons with short CDs to fight on your side. But demons require knowledge of pet management, and if they pull extra mobs, your party may consider kicking you. So basically all you need to do is generate and spend the Warlock’s iconic resource: Soul Shards.
Demonology Warlocks usually cast their spells non-stop, as the downtime significantly affects their performance the most but is also straightforward and intuitive. Keep generating Soul Shards through Shadow Bolt and Demonbolt and spend those resources on Call Dreadstalkers and Hand of Gul’dan.
Demonology Warlock Rotation
Summon Demonic Tyrant is our main cooldown in WoW Demonology Warlock rotation. During its 15-second duration, the Demonic Tyrant extends the lifespan of all existing demons and enhances their damage by 15% through its activation aura.
Summon Demonic Tyrant should not be used thoughtlessly. Properly setting up for the Demonic Tyrant is an essential aspect of effectively playing the specialization.
As a general rule, try to line up 1 or 2-minute trinkets with Grimoire: Felguard, and 1.5 or 3-minute trinkets with Summon Demonic Tyrant. When playing with Grand Warlock’s Design, every Tyrant cycle is every 1 minute, making the choice simpler instead.
Single-Target Demonology Warlock Rotation
- Cast Grimoire: Felguard whenever available;
- Cast Summon Vilefiend whenever available;
- Cast Demonic Strength whenever available;
- Cast Guillotine whenever available;
- Cast Bilescourge Bombers whenever available;
- Cast Call Dreadstalkers whenever available;
- Cast Hand of Gul’dan if you have 4-5 Soul Shards;
- Maintain Doom, paying attention to not be at 5 Soul Shards when it expires;
- Cast Demonbolt if you have 2+ stacks of Demonic Core;
- Cast Power Siphon with 2 or less Demonic Core;
- Cast Hand of Gul’dan with 3 Soul Shards;
- Cast Soul Strike whenever available when at 4 or less Soul Shards;
- Cast Shadow Bolt to generate Soul Shards.
Grand Warlock’s Design substantially changes the timing of the spec and its cooldown management, offering a more intuitive and simple 1-minute loop that aligns naturally with 2-minute buffs/trinkets.
In order to achieve this loop in the most optimal way, there are a few things to consider.
- Always delay Summon Vilefiend in order to extend the demon with Tyrant.
- Always line up Grimoire: Felguard with a Tyrant extension.
At the beginning of a fight, it is advisable to cast Demonic Core and Demonbolt on different targets as to apply multiple Brands, which will detonate subsequently, as opposed to only focusing on a single target to shorten the Brand timer.
AoE Demonology Warlock Rotation
Demonology has little variation in playstyle when multiple targets are present. Implosion is the only ability that is not a part of the single target rotation, which we must take note of.
When dealing with multiple stacked targets, we will often use Implosion for additional damage. Imps will cause a significant amount of damage over time, but they will also generate Implosion damage before disappearing. This also enables more Demonic Core procs in the short term, which we can use for more resources to fuel Hand of Gul’dan.
- Cast Grimoire: Felguard;
- Cast Summon Vilefiend;
- Cast Call Dreadstalkers whenever available;
- Cast Guillotine whenever available;
- Cast Demonic Strength whenever available;
- Cast Bilescourge Bombers whenever available;
- Cast Soul Strike whenever possible;
- Cast Hand of Gul’dan if you have 4-5 Soul Shards;
- Cast Implosion to detonate Wild Imps on 2+ targets;
- Cast Demonbolt if you have 3+ stacks of Demonic Core;
- Cast Power Siphon to generate Demonic Core;
- Cast Shadow Bolt to generate Soul Shards.
If there are a large number of targets and no damage priorities, such as during dungeon trash, and the Tyrant is on cooldown, you should no longer cast Summon Vilefiend (without Fel Invocation), instead opting to use your Soul Shards on more Hand of Gul’dan casts and more frequent Implosions. Always cast Call Dreadstalkers even in AoE, since you will gain Demonic Core procs.
If you have talented heavily into additional AoE, such as the talent Bilescourge Bombers, you should use such abilities more or less on cooldown, or when you judge you will get maximum benefit out of them.
Warlock Class Talents
Here we can see the basic Demonology Warlock WoW talents.
| Talents | Desrciption |
|---|---|
| Call Dreadstalkers | One of your main sources of damage, with a 2 Soul Shard cost and 20-second cooldown. After Dreadstalkers expire, they grant you 1 Demonic Core stack for each model. |
| Demoniac | Grant access to both Demonbolt and Demonic Core. The first is an active ability that generates 2 Soul Shards with a long cast time. Instant-cast when used to consume a stack of Demonic Core. |
| Summon Vilefiend | Single-target damaging demon with a cooldown; very efficient for its shard cost. |
| Soul Strike | Short cooldown instant ability that makes Felguard charge an enemy, dealing damage. |
| Bilescourge Bombers | Ground-targeted AoE spell that costs 2 Soul Shards and deals damage in 8 yards over 6 seconds. |
| Demonic Strength | A 1-minute cooldown Felstorm that does 4 times the damage. Cannot be used if the Felguard is already performing a Felstorm. |
| Implosion | Sacrifices all of your active Wild Imps, flinging them towards a target and dealing AoE damage to all targets within 8 yards. |
| Power Siphon | Sacrifices 2 Wild Imps to grant 2 Demonic Cores and 30% additional damage on the 2 Demonbolts. |
| Grimoire: Felguard | Summons a temporary second Felguard, which will charge and stun the target before dealing increased damage for a limited duration. |
| Doom | Deals a high damage single hit at the end of its duration and generates a Soul Shard |
| Nether Portal | Allows the summoning of additional demons that will deal exclusively single-target damage, each time the player spends a Soul Shard (regardless of the amount of Shards spent). |
| Summon Demonic Tyrant | Extends the duration of all the non-Wild Imps existing demons by 15 seconds, freeze the energy consumption of up to 10 Wild Imps, and increases the damage output of all active demons by 15%. |
| Guillotine | Creates a ground-targeted AoE damage pulse and makes your Felguard’s auto attacks cleave. During this duration, Felguard will not cast Felstorm. |
Demonology Warlock Talents
Talent choices for a The War Within Demonology Warlock are really up to the player. There is no “correct” talent setup, as the goal is to find talent combinations that work best for you. However, some general tips can be given:
| Talents | Desrciption |

| Dreadlash | Enables your Call Dreadstalkers to have an AoE effect when summoned and have their Dreadbite deal additional damage. |

| Inner Demons | You passively summon a Wild Imp to fight for you every 12 sec |
| Fel Sunder | Stacking damage buff on the targets hit by Felstorm. |
| Demonic Calling | Gives you a chance to cast your Call Dreadstalkers for free and make it an instant cast. |
| Dread Calling | For every Soul Shard spent casting Hand of Gul’dan your Call Dreadstalkers will deal more damage. |
| Antoran Armaments | Enables your Felguard to deal more damage passively and makes Soul Strike cleave if taken. |
| Sacrificed Souls | Shadow Bolt and Demonbolt deal additional damage for every demon summoned. |
| Soulbound Tyrant | When you cast Summon Demonic Tyrant, gain Soul Shards. |
| The Expendables | After your Wild Imps expire, your other demons deal more damage. |
| Infernal Command | When your Felguard is active, Wild Imps and Call Dreadstalkers deal more damage. |
| Grand Warlock’s Design | Reduced the cooldown of Summon Demonic Tyrant by 30s. |
| Immutable Hatred | Your Felguard gains additional damage when striking only 1 enemy, gaining even more damage after 3 consecutive hits. Effect resets if your Felguard hits additional targets. |

Demonology Warlock Stats
With the introduction of stacking diminishing returns on secondary stats, you will generally want to follow this WoW Demonology Warlock stat priority to sim your character:
- Item Level;
- Intellect;
- Haste to approximately 27%*;
- Versatility = Crit;
- Mastery;
- Haste past 27%.
📌Note: This priority differs for everyone depending on the gear level, you should regularly sim yourself to find out the best stat allocation for your own personal character.
This stat priority was determined using a Simulation Craft profile in standard WoW Demonology Warlock BiS gear with normalized stats. This was supposed to emulate a very “average” set of player gear, but you should look to this information with a grain of salt. It’s highly recommended you sim yourself in order to determine which stats your character gets maximum benefit out of since this is liable to change depending on your ratios.
Overall, Haste remains generally the best secondary stat. On single-target, Critical Strike and, to a lesser extent, Versatility become more valuable since damage distribution shifts more toward player damage, hence not affected by Mastery.
Mastery is still valuable, and it relates to general pets/guardian damage; it becomes gradually more appealing the more targets enter the fray as the damage profile shifts towards the AoE generated by pets and cast of Implosion.
Demonology Warlock Leveling

Demonology Warlock End-Game
End-game content consists of raiding, Mythic+, and PvP. Class performance varies in each of these areas. Demonology Warlock is a flexible and pretty adaptive class that shines greatly in all of these kinds of end-game content. You will have great and enjoyable experiences as you progress. PvP is one of the most exciting options, with Gladiator Title being the highest reward, that we can get for you.
Best Race for Demonology Warlock
Warlocks have no restrictions in terms of racial choice. All of the races have their own pros and cons, but they are not so significant. You should choose based on your preferences. And here we share the best race for Demonology Warlock WoW The War Within from our team’s point of view.
Alliance
Human is the best race for Alliance Warloc because of Will to Survive. You’ll need it in the toughest encounters with lots of CC.
Horde
Undead is the best race for Horde Warlock because of Will of the Forsaken and other useful racials. This race is not only the best race for Demonology Warlock WoW for the Horde, but also one of the most popular options.
Best Profession for Demonology Warlock
Since all professions have almost the same profit for almost every class specialization, you should choose a profession for your character only based on your personal preferences. If you struggle with a choice, we recommend you to take a Tailoring + Enchanting pair for your Demonology Warlock. It allows you to craft valuable armor for your character. Also, there are Alchemy + Herbalism and Jewelcrafting + Mining options. If you need profession knowledge to level up any of these professions, we are glad to offer you Profession Knowledge farm from our pro players.
Improving as a Demonology Warlock
If you find yourself facing performance issues, analyzing your Demonology Warlock gameplay will help you to resolve most problems. Game experience is the strongest weapon in your arsenal, that’s why you should practice with your character anytime you can.
Cleave Cooldowns
Lots of your single-target CDs are effective for dealing heavy AoE cleave damage. E.g. if the boss is going to summon adds, it is worthwhile to hold on to CDs such as Demonic Strength or Grimoire: Felguard. Pairing off your cooldowns to the context of the fight is a very important part of achieving maximum damage; players with high awareness of fight timers will have a much easier time.
Demonic Core
As we often have large numbers of Imps expiring at once, it is possible with good luck to quickly generate large numbers of Demonic Core stacks. If you are not ready for the influx of procs, you risk overcapping your stacks and losing precious Soul Shards. Once you reach 2 stacks of Demonic Core, you should be ready to spend stacks on Demonbolt quickly, as it is easy to quickly overcap from there.
Demonic Tyrant
Summon Demonic Tyrant is a cooldown that needs to be set up in advance, since you want to have as many demons at the ready for use as possible. Make sure you are always aware of when you are going to use this CD, and how you can maximize your demon count in advance of it.
Call Dreadstalkers
Call Dreadstalkers is one of the core skills, especially if you are playing with Demonic Calling. You want to get your Dreadstalkers out as quickly as possible because any extra uses you might happen to get during the course of a fight results in a noticeable amount of extra damage. Keep a careful watch on this cooldown and be ready to use it immediately once it is ready.
Demonology Warlock Macros
Macros are also a way to improve your Demonology Warlock performance. They are always handy for casters, and you’ll definitely see the difference in performance when you start using macros. Below, we have gathered the best options for Demonology Warlock in The War Within WoW.
