Its very easy, especially if you have some experience with other competitive shooters. Competitive matches is a way for the players to prove their superiority and skill, as well as a convenient way to sort players out based on their performance, so thay everyone can play with people around their own skill level. While Crusible offers some rewards, such as emblems and weapon rolls, the main reward is in climbing the ranking ladder itself, making a name for yourself in the community.
At the start, you’ll have the “rank” Untested. You’ll have to play seven placement matches before the game will place you into a Division fitting of your skill. After that, you just play the matches and earn the Division Points. The more matches you win and the better your personal performance is, the faster you’d be earning the points.
Once you reach the top of your Division, you’d be placed in the Promotion matches. They consist of 3 matches, 2 of which the player must win in order to move onto the next rank. However, when playing against other players, consistently winning the matches and showing the best personal results might be easier said than done.
Technically, there’s 7 ranks, 8 if you count the “rank” of Untested. However, there’s also numerical ranks within each division. Here’s how the ranks look like, from lowest to highest:
Yes, and there are actually multiple ways this can happen. If you’re below rank Gold III, you risk losing your ranks for bad performance. The player at the bottom of their rank floor will be placed in the Relegation matches. It's a series of three matches, two of which they have to win in order to secure their place. Otherwise, they’re sent back to the lower Rank.
Players above Gold III still face the same danger, but now their rank can also passively decay with time if they don’t do enough matches every week to gain special Division Protection Points, up to 12 of which can be held at the same time.
Here’s the list of rewards you can expect for participating in Destiny 2 competitive matches:
Players reaching the rank of Gold III or higher may find their ranks at the risk of decay. What that means is that, if you’ll stop participating in the competitive matches, your rank will slowly decrease as the game will start stripping you off your Division Points. To avoid that, they need to complete matches in order to earn Decay Protection Points, one per completed match. One DP Point will burn down every day and you’ll lose a total of three points at once during a Weekly Reset.
If you don’t have enough points during the reset, you will lose Division Points possibly, even your rank. To make sure that it doesn't happen, players should play enough matches weekly to always have enough Decay Protection Points at hand. However, it’s only possible to keep up to 12 DPPs at once.

We worked out instructions to avoid the risks involved. Make sure to follow them. Your managers and boosters will tell you what to do before and during the order execution <3
