It’s time for us to get acquainted with the pink class of World of Warcraft. In this The War Within Paladin Guide, we’ll go over all of the changes in Paladin class, as well as give you some tips. Get comfortable, something is interesting ahead of you. By the way, to improve your gameplay, read our TWW Best Addons Guide.
The War Within Paladin Overview
The Paladin class is canon for the World of Warcraft class. Most of the main characters were paladins — Arthas Menethil, Uther, and many others. But unfortunately, they did not have this guide, so they all failed. Arthas became Death Knight (by the way, have a look at our Death Knight Guide), then he was taken down, and no battle rez for this expansion for him. Uther didn’t end well also, but again — they didn’t have the knowledge that we have. In other words, you need to be well-prepared with our TWW expansion guide.
Paladin is a melee class that can take on one of three roles: Protection for a Tank, Retribution for a Damage Dealer, and Holy for a Healer. Regardless of specialization, all Paladins wear plate mail, but their main attributes differ. The first two specializations’ main attributes are Strength and Holy — Intellect. All in all, this class is a blend of damage and powerful abilities.
Paladin Strengths and Weaknesses
The strengths and weaknesses of each class are purely subjective things. However, there are axioms with which most agree. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the Strengths and Weaknesses of each spec:
| Protection | Retribution | Holy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strengths | ✅ Unique party utility (Blessing of Sacrifice, Blessing of Freedom, and Blessing of Protection); ✅ Multiple CCs; ✅ High survival rate. | ✅ Good AoE and single-target DMG; ✅ Unique party utility and Divine Shield; ✅ Awesome self-healing. | ✅ Best personal defensive; ✅ Unique party utility (Blessing of Sacrifice, Blessing of Freedom, and Blessing of Protection); ✅ Good DPS. |
| Weaknesses | ⛔️ Vulnerable at the beginning of the battle; ⛔️ Low HP bar (for tank); ⛔️ Hard to master the spec. | ⛔️ DPS is very dependent on CDs; ⛔️ Low mobility. | ⛔️ Poor mobility; ⛔️ Low AoE healing; ⛔️ He is a melee healer. |
The War Within Paladin Changes
In The War Within Paladin, changes are quite significant, and they will leave their footprint on the Paladin gameplay. Here’s a list of the most notable of them:
- Firstly, Glimmer of Light was removed;
- Daybreak was also removed from the game;
- Rising Sunlight now works a bit differently: casting Avenging Wrath or Divine Toll will make your next 2 Holy Shocks cast 2 additional times;
- Crusader’s Reprieve also removed.
Also, the new Hero Talent Trees were added to the game, bringing more customizable builds and fun to the game. And an icing on this cake with changes is the Warbands. This feature brings easier resource management for your main character and alts. You can get Warband Bank unlock service and enjoy all the advantages of Warbands now.
The War Within Paladin Abilities
The main gameplay of the Protection Paladin is to generate a resource called Holy Power and spend it on defensive abilities like Shield of the Righteous and Word of Glory.
Retribution Paladin still generates Holy Power with Judgment, Blade of Justice, and Hammer of Wrath, and spends it on Templar’s Verdict for ST damage and Divine Storm for AoE damage.
If you were already happy with playing melee Holy, little will change for you — you will focus on improving Crusader Strike and Holy Shock in the talent tree.
The War Within Paladin Rotation
As each Paladin spec represents different roles, the rotation also differs from spec to spec. But, the general aim of Paladin combat gameplay is to generate, or build, Holy Power with one set of spells, and spend it on the most powerful spending abilities.
Therefore, you can start any encounter with Blade of Justice and Divine Toll, and then spend the generated HP on Final Verdict, Divine Storm if AoE is needed, or other abilities that offer decent damage.
The War Within Paladin Leveling
Paladin is one of the best leveling classes. Regardless of specialization, he has a lot of damage, awesome self-healing, and even immortality in PvE environments. One drawback is poor mobility, but it’s not so bad because you have a mount that will come in handy if you level up on the Warlords of Draenor and Legion expansion quests because they give the most experience.
As an alternative to the open world, you can choose dungeons. Paladin of any specialization will be a good addition to a group because you can take any role and succeed.
Ans of course, one more thing to try is Power Leveling. Overgear pro players will carry your character through all the difficulties of leveling, and you won’t even have to lift a finger.
Useful consumables and equipment for leveling:
- Gunshoes — A very useful object to go very fast during 25s;
- Light-Step Hoofplates — gives +20% mounted speed;
- Goblin Glider Kit — allows you to glide slowly from any cliff. Saves a lot of time;
- Fried Bonefish — food from Shadowlands. Gives 263 move speed for 6s after killing an enemy.

The War Within Paladin Stats
Stat priority is what matters when it comes to gearing your character. For Paladins, you are going to prioritise Strength for Tanking and DPSing spec, and Intellect for Healer. Secondary stats vary, though.
Also, keep in mind, that though Mastery is not primary for Paladins, it affects each spec differently:
- Mastery for Protection — increases your chance to block and damage reduction while standing in Consecration;
- Mastery for Retribution — increases your Holy damage;
- Mastery for Holy — increases the effectiveness of healing.
| Protection | Retribution | Holy |
|---|---|---|
| Strength; Haste; Mastery; Versatility; Critical Strike. | Strength; Haste; = Mastery; = Versatility; = Critical Strike. | Intellect; Haste; Versatility; Critical Strike; Mastery. |

The War Within Paladin Best Race
Horde
For Horde, one of the best options is Zandalari Troll. They have a wide variety of most useful racials:
- Regeneratin’ — heal you at maximum HP (best synergy with Divine Shield);
- Embrace of the Loa — extra stats for you.
Also Tauren can be a good Paladin thanks to the wide range of their abilities:
- Brawn — extra 2% Crit;
- Endurance — extra Stamina. You need it because Paladin is a low HP tank;
- War Stomp — stun for 2 sec within 8yds;
- Any transmog on Tauren looks best.
Alliance
For the Alliance, there are also two nice options. The first one is Dark Iron Dwarf, an allied race, which is worth unlocking due to its abilities:
- Fireblood — removes all negative effects, increases your primary and an additional stat for 8 sec;
- Forged in Flames — reduces Physical damage taken by 1%.
The second option is simply a Human. But they are not that simple, because their racial abilities are also impressive:
- The Human Spirit — an extra 2% for all secondary stats from all sources;
- Will to Survive — removes all stun effects.
The War Within Paladin PvP
If you like PvP, then Paladins are a good choice due to their strong burst damage, healing, and utility. You can leverage abilities like Templar’s Verdict for high burst damage and Divine Shield for invulnerability. Key talents include Unbound Freedom for increased mobility and Divine Purpose for enhanced burst potential.
And what is the highest reward for PvP success? Right, Gladiator Title, which you can achieve with the assistance of our professional team of PvP players. It’s fast, easy, and very convenient.
The War Within Paladin Best Professions
Paladin wears plate armor, so you can choose Blacksmithing. In The War Within, professions allow you to create armor and weapons that are as powerful as mythic equipment, so this is a good option for enhancing your character. Mining works best with Blacksmithing. Mining will help you get the needed resources, and you can sell the surplus on AH.
For more successful results in dungeons, it is best to study Engineering because it opens access to items like Disposable Spectrophasic Reanimator and Wyrmhole Generator: Dragon Isles.
