Holy Paladin Overview

There’s a mighty warrior on the side of justice and protection — WoW Holy Paladin. This healer class is one of the best supports in the game, and you can often find Holy Pal at the top of the tier lists. Once trying Holy Paladin, you won’t be able to find a better spot healing option.

In The War Within Retribution Paladin utilizes a one-handed weapon and a shield. The gear is Plate, and your primary stat is Intellect. Don’t be surprised, as Holy Pal is a caster who uses light to heal his allies. Your primary resource is Holy Power, which you can accumulate via builders (abilities that allow for faster resource accumulation or regeneration) and use on the most powerful spells aka spenders (abilities, which use your Holy Power instead of mana).

Holy Paladin Strengths and Weaknesses

Any class, even the strongest one, has its own pros and cons. The same goes for Holy Paladin WoW: while being overall strong, the spec has some minor disadvantages to consider.

Holy Paladin Season 3 Changes

New season — new changes, and Patch 11.2 alters the WoW TWW Holy Paladin gameplay with a major Infusion of Light rework, a new synergy talent, and tier set adjustments for Herald of the Sun. The Infusion changes make procs less frequent but far more impactful, encouraging you to actively weave them into your healing rotation.

Holy Specialization Ability Changes

• Infusion of Light: Proc rate changed to flat 10% on Holy Shock (including Divine Toll and Rising Sunlight).
• Judgment grants +1 Holy Power.
• Flash of Light: +150% healing, instant cast.
• Holy Light: –30% cast time.

Holy Paladin Talent Changes

• New Talent — Pillars of Light: Works well with Beacon of Virtue and makes it smoother to use.
• Relentless Inquisitor moved; no longer requires Tyr’s Deliverance path.

Holy Paladin Hero Talents Changes

Herald of the Sun:

• Sun’s Avatar: –40% power.
• Dawnlight (with new tier set) and Eternal Flame buffed — reduces need for stacked positioning.

Holy Paladin Season 2 Changes

In Season 2 of TWW, Holy Paladin will receive a substantial number of changes aimed at bringing it back into the pool of top-tier healers. These include updates to abilities and talents, as well as the introduction of a new tier set Oath of the Aureate Sentry with the release of the new Liberation of Undermine raid.

Holy Specialization Ability Changes

Holy Paladin had several specialization abilities adjusted in Patch 11.1.

• Holy Light — Healing increased by 90%.
• Infusion of Light — now increases the healing of Holy Light by 30% (was 100%) and increases the healing of Flash of Light by 30% (was reduce mana cost).

Holy Paladin Talent Changes

• Inflorescence of the Sunwell — now increases Infusion of Light’s healing increase to Flash of Light by an additional 15% and increases the healing of Holy Light by an additional 15% (was 50%).
• Light’s Conviction — now additionally causes Holy Shock to refund half its mana cost when cast offensively.
• Unending Light — now Holy Power spent on Word of Glory to increase the healing of Light of Dawn.

Holy Paladin Hero Talents Changes

Holy Paladin received a few changes to Hero Talents in Patch 11.1. The updated talents are listed below:

Herald of the Sun:

• Sun’s Avatar — During Avenging Wrath, you become linked to your Dawnlights, causing Radiant damage to enemies or (16.2% of Spell power) healing to allies that pass through the beams, reduced beyond 5 targets.
  Activating Avenging Wrath applies up to 4 Dawnlights onto nearby allies or enemies and increases Dawnlight’s duration by 20%.

Lightsmith:

• Hammer and Anvil — healing decreased by 20%.

Holy Paladin Changes In The War Within

The War Within brought many changes to the game, and some of them have affected Holy Paladin’s abilities list as well. It’s the removal of  Glimmer of Light and Daybreak, or the redesign of the Light of the Martyr into a passive buff for Holy Shock, to name a few. 

Another major change is the Hero Talent Trees — a new mostly passive tree to add spice to your gameplay. However, one of the trees is focused on buffs, and many players consider it unenjoyable and boring.

Holy Paladin Hero Talents

So, as mentioned above, Hero Talents are the newly added Holy Paladin WoW talents to the third tree. Holy Paladin has access to two of them:

• Herald of the Sun: the pinnacle of this tree is the Dawnlight talent, which deals Damage over Time or Healing over Time through your Holy Power spenders. The majority of Hero talents in this tree are aimed at amplifying your Dawnlight effectiveness;
• Lightsmith: the second tree, which grants us Sacred Weapon ability, which turns into Holy Bulwark on use.

Changes to The Existing Abilities And Talents

And again, Glimmer of Light and Daybreak were completely removed from the game. Rising Sunlight was reworked, and now allows 2 additional casts of Holy Shock after casting Avenging Wrath or Divine Toll. Blessing of Summer was updated and now converts healing into damage or damage into healing, as a buff.

All in all, Holy Paladin is the class, that did not receive a complete overhaul and core changes. Instead, several changes and adjustments were made just to add some fresh air to Holy Paladin’s mechanics and gameplay.

But keep in mind that you should use your spell on CD to minimize downtime and maximize Holy Power generation. When Holy Power is lacking, you become virtually unable to provide decent healing and use your core spells.

Holy Paladin Leveling

If you are a first-time Holy Pal, you’ll have to go a long way from 1 to 70 level. The best way is to stick to questing in high-density areas, like Draenor or Legion. It’s straightforward but time-consuming. Another option is dungeons. You just have to queue back-to-back for random or timewalking dungeons and loot XP. It’s more convenient to have a high-level friend who can carry you through the dungeons without extra effort.

Leveling from level 70 to 80 should naturally be smooth, you’ll do some campaign quests, inspect new areas and dungeons, and so on. But, sometimes there are loopholes and lifehacks, e.g. in Dragonflight, you could level up a char in a few hours on one of the Farming Spots. Just place your character somewhere in a safe space and ask a high-level guy to farm the spot to loot XP.

Holy Paladin Leveling Tips for The War Within

A few leveling tips never hurt anyone. So, if you are about to start leveling all by yourself, keep in mind that though being a Heal spec, Holy Pal still has a lot of damage abilities.

For instance, the famous Consecration spell burns the ground beneath you, so you can taunt a pack of mobs and burn them with your damage over time effect, crashing with Divine Toll and Shield of the Righteous. All in all, AoE damage is your best friend. And do not forget to protect yourself with personal defensive abilities, and Blessing of Protection + Divine Shield.

• Optimize Your Positioning. Stay close to melee DPS to maximize your Mastery: Lightbringer and ensure Light of Dawn hits more targets while staying in range for Crusader Strike and Avenging Crusader.
