New addon The War Within is coming and so come new changes for all classes, and Devastation Evoker is not an exception. But among all classes Devastation Evoker experienced the least amount of changes. In this WoW The War Within Devastation Evoker guide, our team will tell you everything we know about this spec: its skills, talents, gear, and more. Also, read our Nerub’ar Palace Guide and learn what challenges await your Evoker in the new Raid.
Devastation Evoker Overview
As a new class in World of Warcraft Evokers was good and felt like fresh air among other classes. It was very popular in all aspects and specializations. Also, top guilds in the world’s first race tried to use their full potential at maximum, picking up three Evokers of all specs.
Devastation Evoker is a versatile mid-range DPS with a pretty flexible talent tree. Changing priorities in talents and spells, you can handle single-target, AoE, and cleave encounters.
Evokers use Essence as their main source for their powerful spells. This resource regenerates over time, so you need management skills to properly use your abilities. Also, there is another unique mechanic that makes Evokers so interesting — Empowered spells.
These spells become stronger, depending on how long you empower them, using other spells. Eternity Surge and Fire Breath are the empowered spells for Devastation Evoker. It may sound simple at the start but with the talent choices you are choosing the direction you want to play.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Although Evokers is a pretty squishy class, it has great mobility options to avoid situations where you can take unnecessary damage. But you should keep in mind that the 25-yard range required for most of your spells is still a dangerous placement.
Also, Evokers provide huge utility options for the group. Scarlet Adaptation allows you to enhance your next Living Flame to deal more damage, storing up to 20% of your effective healing amount.
Blessing of the Bronze is an hour buff, which reduces the cooldown for the main movement ability. Time Spiral and Spatial Paradox provide more movement options in different kinds of situations. Fury of the Aspects is the Evokers’ version of Bloodlust or Heroism.
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| ✅ Very good overall DPS in most situations; | ⛔️ No actual immunity to avoid damage, preemptive defensive cooldowns; |
| ✅ Decent and Unique Utilities; | ⛔️ Low 25-yard Range for Caster; |
| ✅ Outstanding Mobility; | ⛔️ Extremely high threat; |
| ✅ Off-healing options to increase your DPS. | ⛔️ Off-healing options to increase your DPS. |
Devastation Evoker Season 3 Changes
Unlike its healer spec, Devastation Evoker received only a few positive changes in WoW The War Within Season 3. Engulf gets a damage increase, but you need to apply Fire Breath on the enemy.
Devastation Evoker Season 2 Changes
In Patch 11.1 of WoW TWW Devastation Evoker received some changes to specialization abilities and talents. Additionally, with the launch of WoW TWW Season 2, the new Liberation of Undermine raid will open, allowing Devastation Evoker to obtain the new Opulent Treasurescale’s Hoard tier set.
Devastation Specialization Ability Changes
In Patch 11.1 Devastation Evoker received improvements to the majority of its specialization abilities.
- The damage of all abilities has been increased by 5%.
Devastation Evoker Talent Changes
In Patch 11.1, Devastation Evoker received talent changes, with some talents being removed and replaced with new ones.
- New Talent: Azure Celerity — Disintegrate ticks 1 additional time, but deals 10% less damage.
- Eternity Surge — now targets enemies within a 25 yard radius around the Evoker (was a 12 yard radius around the target).
- Fan the Flames — has been removed.
- Firestorm — damage increased by 50% and duration reduced to 6 seconds (was 10 seconds).
- Scorching Embers — damage increase now scales with empower level, up to a maximum of 40%, similar to Molten Embers for Augmentation.
Devastation Evoker Talent Changes
In WoW TWW Season 2 with Patch 11.1 Devastation Evoker also received changes to Hero Talents.
Flameshaper:
- Conduit of Flame — Critical strike chance against targets above 50% health increased by 15%.
- Engulf — Cooldown changed from 30 sec recharge to 27 sec recharge.
- Expanded Lungs — Damage and healing increased by 10%. Talent position has changed.
- Traveling Flame — No longer increases Dream Breath or Fire Breath duration and spreads. Instead, reduces the cooldown of Fire Breath or Dream Breath by 5 seconds when you cast Engulf.
- New Talent: Fulminous Roar — Fire Breath and Dream Breath deal their damage and healing in 20% less time.
- Titanic Precision — no longer references Reversion critically striking for Preservation, as it cannot critically heal on application.
Devastation Evoker Changes in The War Within
Disregarding new talent options with the Hero Talents, Devastation Evoker gets no severe changes to the core gameplay. Spatial Paradox is now available for Devastation. Firestorm-related talents also have been changed, AoE setups now lower single-target damage.
In general, Devastation Evoker feels the same as before, but its damage is a bit lowered. But the new Animosity cap has been readjusted: Now Animosity extends the duration of Dragonrage from 5 seconds up to 20 seconds. This may increase your DPS but the damage phase becomes a little harder.
Also in the prepatch was added a new feature Warband Bank, which allows you to transfer items between characters. You can open it with our services if you don’t want to go through the storyline.
Devastation Evoker Hero Talents
We may consider newly introduced Hero Talent Trees as new WoW Devastation Evoker talent trees. It makes our gameplay more flexible and versatile. Scalecommander and Flameshaper are two Hero Talent Trees available to Devastation Evokers, which you share with Augmentation and Preservation respectively. While Scalecommander is more focused on single-target, Flameshaper gives you more AoE and Cleave options.
Here is the list of all new WoW The War Within Devastation Evoker talents in Hero Trees:
Basics of Devastation Evoker Gameplay
As you can already notice, Devastation Evoker is pretty unique. Relying on synergy between different spells you deal damage and help allies with your awesome utilities.
Essence Burst is a proc that allows you to use your Essence spenders such as Disintegrate and Pyre. Try to avoid overcapping Essence.
In general, Essence Burst is generated by casting Living Flame or Azure Strike, but during Dragonrage Essence Burst procs are guaranteed. With Animosity, you can prolong the duration of Dragonrage using your Empowered Spells.
Eternity Surge and Fire Breath are both our Empowered Spells. They have a 30-second cooldown, so make sure it’s ready before using your Dragonrage, but also you need to use them as soon as they are ready.
Devastation Evoker Rotation
The main basic principle of the WoW Devastation Evoker rotation is to use your short cooldown to fill the gaps with Living Flame. If you delay your empower spells, rotation becomes more and more chaotic and desynchronized. It will also affect your DPS.
Single-Target Devastation Evoker Rotation
- Cast Fire Breath at empower rank 1. If Dragonrage is available soon, skip this step as you will need to save it.
- If the targets will not live for the full duration of the Fire Breath DoT then cast Fire Breath at a higher empowerment to not lose any DPS.
- Cast Shattering Star.
- Cast Eternity Surge at empower rank 1. If Dragonrage is available soon, skip this step as you will need to save it.
- Aim to have 1 Essence Burst stack for when Shattering Star comes off cooldown to have your core ability, Disintegrate deal even more amounts of damage.
- Cast Living Flame to consume Burnout procs.
- Spend all of your Essence on Disintegrate.
- Cast Living Flame to consume Burnout procs.
- Cast Living Flame as a filler ability until you have enough Essence to Disintegrate.
- Avoid using Azure Strike whilst the Iridescence Blue buff is up to ensure that Disintegrate is empowered.
- If you need to move while casting, use Hover. If you have no charges of Hover left, then use Azure Strike.
As you can see all spells should be used at empower level 1. You should understand that Fire Breath DoT debuff is the longest on level 1 which is working well with Burnout. Empower ranks 2 and higher don’t affect the damage of Eternity Surge, it only buffs target numbers.
Single-Target Dragonrage Devastation Evoker Rotation
If you start the fight without a cooldown on your Dragonrage, your rotation will change a bit.
- If this is your Dragonrage cast on the pull, pre-cast Living Flame so it lands as the boss engages.
- Cast Dragonrage.
- Cast Fire Breath at empower rank 1.
- Cast Shattering Star.
- Spend all of your Essence on Disintegrate.
- Use Living Flame as your filler ability, as it will deal increased damage with the Iridescence buff. Do not use Azure Strike.
- Cast Eternity Surge.
- Spend all of your Essence on Disintegrate.
- Use Living Flame as your filler spell when the Iridescence buff is active to ensure that Disintegrate is buffed.
- When you run out of Essence cast Living Flame for two Essence Burst procs and cast Disintegrate with these.
- Consume your Burnout procs with Living Flame casts and generate Essence Burst.
- Cast Azure Strike to generate Essence Burst procs.
- Cast Living Flame to generate Essence Burst stacks.
- Cast Disintegrate with Essence Burst procs.
- Your second cast of Fire Breath should be paired with Tip the Scales then once Shattering Star becomes available repeat the standard rotation.
AoE Dragonrage Devastation Evoker Rotation
- Cast Fire Breath at empower rank 1.
- If the targets will not live for the full duration of the Fire Breath DoT then cast Fire Breath at a higher empowerment to not lose any DPS.
- Cast Shattering Star.
- Cast Eternity Surge at higher empower ranks, depending on your target count.
- Cast Azure Strike to generate Essence Burst procs.
- Cast Pyre as your Essence spender on 3 targets with otherwise cast Disintegrate.
- Cast Firestorm.
- Cast Living Flame to consume the Burnout procs to try and get a Snapfire proc.
- Cast Shattering Star when it comes off cooldown.
Two-Target Devastation Evoker Rotation
- Cast Fire Breath at empower rank 1.
- If the targets will not live for the full duration of the Fire Breath DoT then cast Fire Breath at a higher empowerment to not lose any DPS.
- Spend all of your Essence on Disintegrate.
- Use Living Flame as your filler ability, as it will deal increased damage with the Iridescence buff. Do not use Azure Strike.
- Cast Shattering Star.
- Cast Eternity Surge at empower rank 1.
- Aim to have 1-2 Essence Burst stacks for when Shattering Star comes off cooldown to have your Disintegrate deal even more damage.
- Spend all of your Essence on Disintegrate.
- Use Living Flame as your filler spell when the Iridescence buff is active to ensure that Disintegrate is buffed.
- Cast Disintegrate.
- Cast Deep Breath.
- Cast Living Flame to consume the Burnout procs.
- Cast Living Flame as a filler ability until you have enough Essence to Disintegrate.
- If you need to move while casting, use Hover. If you have no charges of Hover left, then use Azure Strike.
Against two targets, your rotation stays the same as in a single target; the only key difference is that Eternity Surge is changed. However, if you have picked the Eternity’s Span talent, then you will double the number of targets, so you will keep using this at empower level 1.
Multi-target Cleave Devastation Evoker Rotation
- Cast Fire Breath at empower rank 2/3.
- If the targets will not live for the full duration of the Fire Breath DoT then cast Fire Breath at a higher empowerment to not lose any DPS.
- Cast Shattering Star.
- Cast Eternity Surge at empower rank 2.
- Cast Pyre as your Essence spender.
- Cast Firestorm.
- Cast Living Flame to consume the Burnout procs to try and get a Snapfire proc.
- Cast Deep Breath.
- Cast Azure Strike as a filler ability until you have enough Essence for your spender.
Against three or four targets, the rotation changes slightly. Eternity Surge is always cast at empower rank 2 (empower rank 3 if you have not picked Eternity’s Span), and Azure Strike starts to creep its way into the rotation if you have picked Eternity’s Span.

Improving as a Devastation Evoker
If you find yourself facing performance issues and believe there is room for improvement, we encourage you to read a comprehensive list of common mistakes and frequently asked questions to address your concerns.
Cooldowns
As long as you hold your cooldowns the more you waste them. Dragonrage is no exception. Try to optimize your rotation during Dragonrage, because your mastery is your main weapon in the arsenal. Ideally, you should know how long every fight will last. This means you should know how many Dragonrage uses you can afford.
In a perfect situation, the fight should end with your Dragonrage expiring at the same time. It is also the same for other cooldowns, like trinkets. Better to choose “on-use” trinkets with the same cooldown as Dragonrage.
Overcharging Your Empowered Spells
Similar to Essence Spenders, proper usage of your empowered spells has an influence on your DPS performance:
- Eternity Surge should be charged to the number of targets you are fighting. With the level of empowerment, damage is not increasing.
- Fire Breath is a more complicated spell than it seems. On the face of it, the 3rd empower level deals more damage, but you should invest many resources to empower it. That’s why it’s better to use level 1 empower with a longer duration. Of course, you should maintain the DoT as long as you can. Aim at 100% debuff uptime.
Overusing Filler Abilities
You should always spend your empowered abilities and essence spenders. Try to use your Living Flame and Azure Strike when you have nothing else to use. Remember Empower, Spend, Fill. Only this order.
Overcapping Essence
Outside of Dragonrage, you should see the Essence system as Combo points. Spend them when you reach max stacks. But in Dragonrage things become more complicated. Try to use Essence as much as you can.
Master Your Rotations
If you feel that you can improve your DPS performance, a training dummy can become your best friend. Mastering your rotation in your free time is the best you can do. You can start with simplification. Of course, it will lower your DPS, but when you master your basic combat rotation, you can add more abilities one by one. In the end, you can be surprised how it will affect your DPS. And don’t forget: Practice makes everything perfect.
Is Evoker Viable in The War Within?
Regarding all we told you earlier, we consider it viable. Its awesome utilities, decent DPS, great mobility, and adaptability make Devastation Evoker popular in End-Game content like Raids and Mythic+. As with all other classes it requires certain skills to shine. But you find playing Devastation Evoker interesting and challenging. Compared to S-tier class specs it shows yourself adequately.
Devastation Evoker Macros
If you are looking for a way to improve your skills aside from the tips above, try to use Macros. They help to make casting easier and more convenient, so it may help you to become a better Evoker player.
