The Great Vault is the main weekly reward system in World of Warcraft. After each server reset, you can unlock up to nine reward options. You can do so by clearing raid bosses, dungeons, and delves. In this Great Vault guide, we will cover how it works, where to find it, how to unlock rewards, and what to do if none of the gear fits your needs. If you are just starting your gearing journey, you might also want to check out our D.I.S.C. Belt Guide here at Overgear to gain a lot of power early!
What is The Great Vault in WoW
The Great Vault is a weekly loot system that grants players one guaranteed piece of gear each week based on their prior activities across three content categories: Raids, Mythic+ and Heroic dungeons, and Delves / World Activities.
You can unlock up to three reward choices per category (totaling up to nine potential options) by completing various achievements each week. However, you are only allowed to pick just one item per week.
If none of the loot options look interesting, you can instead claim Algari Tokens of Merit. This is a secondary currency that can be spent on alternative rewards, which we will discuss further below.
Where to Find the Great Vault in The War Within
In The War Within, the Great Vault is located in Dornogal, the main hub city in Khaz Algar. Specifically, you will find it inside the bank building, just behind the banking area or the Treasury. It is always marked on your map with a vault icon.
📌 You can interact with the Vault door to either check your current progress or claim your weekly rewards, but you must physically visit Dornogal to actually collect the loot; you can’t collect rewards from the map screen.
When Does The Great Vault Reset
The Great Vault operates on a weekly server reset. For North America, Latin America, and Oceanic regions, the reset takes place on Tuesday. For European servers, the reset happens early Wednesday morning.
The Great Vault operates on a weekly reset schedule, tied to your server region:
- North America, Latin America, and Oceanic regions: resets on Tuesdays at 15:00 UTC;
- Europe: resets on Wednesdays at 04:00 UTC.
It’s important to remember that your current week’s activities affect the rewards you will see after the next reset. For example, if you clear several raid bosses or push high-level Mythic+ dungeons this week, you won’t see the rewards until the Vault refreshes next week.
The Great Vault Rewards
As mentioned earlier, The Great Vault in The War Within offers rewards across three main categories: Raids, Dungeons, and World Content. Each category can provide up to three reward slots per week, depending on how much you participate in that type of content. While you can only choose one reward overall, unlocking additional slots gives you more chances to see a useful upgrade.
Raid Category
Raid slots are based on the number of unique bosses you defeat each week. You don’t need to clear the entire raid in one go, as every boss you kill counts. It is also important to note that the Vault pulls its reward options from the loot tables of the bosses you killed during the week.
- 1st slot: Defeat 2 raid bosses;
- 2nd slot: Defeat 4 raid bosses;
- 3rd slot: Defeat 6+ raid bosses.
This means that even partial clears still matter. If you are after a specific piece of gear, focusing on killing the boss that drops it increases your chances of seeing it appear in the Vault. You can also fill your Vault with Manaforge Omega Heroic Gear with our help if you don’t want to participate in raiding yourself.
Dungeon Category
Dungeon progress is tied to the number of completed runs, regardless of whether they are Heroic, Mythic, or Timewalking. However, the difficulty of the dungeon affects the quality of the reward you will see in the Vault.
- 1st slot: Complete 1 Heroic, Mythic, or Timewalking dungeon;
- 2nd slot: Complete 4 such dungeons;
- 3rd slot: Complete 8 such dungeons.
Timewalking dungeons count at the Heroic level, making them a quick way to fill in requirements, while Mythic+ dungeons scale much higher and provide the best Vault rewards when you push into higher key levels.
The Great Vault Dungeon Gear ilvl
Unlike Raid loot, Mythic+ rewards from the Great Vault are higher than the items you get directly from dungeon chests. The Vault also gives you crests based on the Keystone level you complete, which are used for upgrading gear. Here’s how Mythic+ rewards break down in The War Within:
| Keystone Level | End of Dungeon Item Level and Upgrade Track | Crest Rewarded | Great Vault Item Level and Upgrade Track |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 684 (Champion 2/8) | Runed Ethereal Crest ×10 | 694 (Hero 1/6) |
| 3 | 684 (Champion 2/8) | Runed Ethereal Crest ×12 | 694 (Hero 1/6) |
| 4 | 688 (Champion 3/8) | Runed Ethereal Crest ×14 | 697 (Hero 2/6) |
| 5 | 691 (Champion 4/8) | Runed Ethereal Crest ×16 | 697 (Hero 2/6) |
| 6 | 694 (Hero 1/6) | Runed Ethereal Crest ×18 | 701 (Hero 3/6) |
| 7 | 694 (Hero 1/6) | Gilded Ethereal Crest ×10 | 704 (Hero 4/6) |
| 8 | 697 (Hero 2/6) | Gilded Ethereal Crest ×12 | 704 (Hero 4/6) |
| 9 | 697 (Hero 2/6) | Gilded Ethereal Crest ×14 | 704 (Hero 4/6) |
| 10 | 701 (Hero 3/6) | Gilded Ethereal Crest ×16 | 707 (Myth 1/6) |
| 11 | 701 (Hero 3/6) | Gilded Ethereal Crest ×18 | 707 (Myth 1/6) |
| 12+ | 701 (Hero 3/6) | Gilded Ethereal Crest ×20 | 707 (Myth 1/6) |
That’s how Mythic+ Great Vault rewards scale, giving you higher item levels and crest upgrades the deeper you push your keys.
World Category
The world content category allows solo and casual players to participate in the Vault system through mostly Delves. Here is how many Delves you need to complete to fill out your Vault for the week:
- 1st slot: Complete 2 Delves or world activities;
- 2nd slot: Complete 4 of them;
- 3rd slot: Complete 8 of them.
By completing higher-tier Delves, you can even earn rewards comparable to those from group content. This makes it a viable gearing path on its own! We can help you with completing Delves if you just want the gear without the stress as well.
The Great Vault Tokens
You might be wondering what happens if you skip the vault. If the loot options aren’t upgrades or suitable, you may instead claim Algari Tokens of Merit. The amount depends on how many Vault slots you unlocked:
- 1 slot unlocked → 2 Tokens;
- 2 slots unlocked → 4 Tokens;
- 3+ slots unlocked → 6 Tokens.
These currency tokens can be exchanged at a vendor named Ardgaz, who stands near the Great Vault. Here is what you can get with these tokens:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Chest of Gold / 1,000 gold | 1 Token |
| Triumphant Satchel of Carved Ethereal Crests / 15 Crests | 1 Token |
| Celebratory Pack of Runed Ethereal Crests / 15 Crests | 2 Tokens |
| Technomancer’s Gift / Adds a socket to an item | 6 Tokens |
| Fractured Spark of Starlight | 6 Tokens |
This option serves as a gear backup, especially for players not getting useful Vault drops.
How to Check the Great Vault in WoW
If you want to see your current Great Vault progress without traveling all the way to Dornogal, you can do it directly through the in-game UI.
- Open your Group Finder (default hotkey: I);
- Navigate to the Delves tab;
- In this menu, you’ll find a Great Vault section showing how many slots you’ve unlocked for the week across Raids, Dungeons, and World Content.
This lets you track your progress at any time and plan out what activities to prioritize before the reset.
📌 Keep in mind that this only shows your progress. To actually open the Vault, generate your loot options, and claim your reward, you’ll still need to visit the Great Vault in Dornogal.
The Great Vault in The War Within is a great gearing mechanic, especially for players who engage with multiple types of content. It balances RNG with choice, provides fallback options via Tokens, and ensures that even light or solo players can steadily climb item levels and stay geared throughout the season!
