The very idea of Legendary items has been changing throughout the years and expansions. The very first Legendaries were lootable; then they became assembled. Finally, several years ago, Legendary items started dropping now and then to literally everyone from either final bosses or regular mobs. Shadowlands, in its turn, presents us with a new scheme of creating Legendary items by ourselves.
General Info about Legendaries
This time we are given a large variety of possibilities to create the Legendary item we hunger the most. The main component of a yet future Legendary item is a Memory of the Runecarver recipe that has dozens of variations and may be gathered from different sources.
Below you may find the basic things you have to know about the new legendary system in Shadowlands.
Note that everything may yet change on the release.
- You may start working on getting Legendaries only upon reaching level 60 and selecting a Covenant. The starting quest is called Prison of the Forgotten.
- Memory of the Runecarver legendary recipes drop only if you have unlocked the Runecarver.
- Legendary gear pieces consist of several components: a Shadowlands crafted legendary base item, two Missives, 100 of Soul Ash, and a Memory of the Runecarver.
- Base items and Missives can be created with Professions (Leatherworking, Tailoring, Jewelcrafting, and Blacksmithing for base items and Inscription for Missives). Soul Ash comes from clearing layers within Torghast; and Memory of the Runecarver recipes can be unlocked through a variety of content in Shadowlands.
- Base Items are not soulbound and may be traded, mailed, and bought/sold on the Auction House.
- All classes have unique ways to get each Runecarver recipe. The good news is that almost all recipes have a 100% drop chance and do not depend on the spec or the loot specialization.
- The recipe will become available for all characters over the account after being learned.
- Each legendary recipe may be combined with only two or three strictly determined gear slots.
- There are 8 general recipes available for all classes and specs.
- Each class with two exceptions has 16 legendary recipes to unlock: 4 class-related, available for all specializations, and 4 for each spec (12 on the whole).
- Demon Hunters have only 12, as they’ve got only two specializations.
- Druids have 20, correspondingly.
- The Adventure Guide will have a new Powers tab, where you will be able to find all the necessary information about the Runecarver recipes.
- Each character will be able to wear only one Legendary item on the release of Shadowlands. However, this quantity may increase with future patches.
- All legendary items are expected to have four ranks, which means they may be improved.

How to get?
You may obtain the legendary recipes by taking part in all kinds of Shadowlands content:
Loot from bosses in raids and dungeons, and World bosses.
Buy from faction Quartermasters for gold in case you have earned the Revered reputation status.
The PvP Vendors in Oribos sell legendary recipes in exchange for the special PvP rating currency.
One recipe is a reward for raising a certain Renown level with the chosen covenant.
Loot from different creatures while completing the Maw and Torghast encounters.
Chronicle of Lost Memories
This is a special item that will grant your character a Legendary Effect you have not yet learned. As long as lots of details are not settled yet, the information about the Chronicle of Lost Memories keeps changing. The latest updates state that this catch-up item may be obtained with Grateful Offering, a special currency gained from the inhabitants of Shadowlands for completing tasks with your Anima Conductor. As the Chronicle of Lost Memories requires 4 Anima Streams from your Conductor to be fully empowered, you will need to empower your Anima Conductor at least 40 times to gain access to this item, which takes about forty days, so this serves more like a catch-up for any Legendary effect you might have missed.
Your Covenant’s Renown vendor will be the one to sell Chronicle of Lost Memories to you for 35 Grateful Offerings.
