Heart of Azeroth

Let’s open up our 8.2 preview series with an overview of the new Azerite system that is coming with the 8.2 patch. This update brings with it new customization options for everyone, brand new special traits, use effects, and a whole list of new skills to fit different playstyles. We’re pretty sure that most people reading this article would agree that changes to Heart of Azeroth are long overdue, as the Battle for Azeroth artifact felt a bit lackluster compared to its Legion counterpart – class weapon artifacts.

Let’s take a deep dive into the upcoming rework!

Heart of Azeroth Talents

Heart of Azeroth – WoW Patch 8.2 Changes

Once the patch hits the servers and you establish a base in Nazjatar, one of the new areas, you will receive a summon from Magni, calling for an adventure and starting a new questline. Players will rebuild the Heart chamber, unlocking the Heart forge and Essense slots system within the necklace artifact. From the beginning, you’ll open a single Major slot for an Active ability, and as you level up Heart of Azeroth, you will unlock two more minor essence slots for Minor Passive power.

Essences, just like gear items, will have a variety of different quality ranks, and as you get a higher ranked essence, it is not necessarily a straight damage boost. It may provide more stats, additional charges or utility elements. For those players who are into top PvP levels and Mythic raiding, there is the highest level of the essence – Legendary. Once you obtain a top-level essence you will gain a dramatic cosmetic appearance change, so everyone around you will instantly recognize it once you fire off the upgraded ability.

Essences can be obtained from different activities in World of Warcraft: you can get them from quests, dungeons, raids, PvP, and outdoor activities. You don’t have to upgrade essences from a lower rank, you can obtain a higher rank right away. Complete harder content to get higher ranked essences.

Artifact Power will be used to unlock new Essence slots at levels 55, 60 and 65, giving stamina bonus per level along the way. Neck level is capped at 70.

Essences system can be compared to Glyphs – you have 1 major slot and 2 minor slots. A Major slot provides a powerful active ability and Minor – passive effect. Essence socketed in a big golden socket slot applies both Major and Minor bonuses, while two small sockets only apply the minor ones. That gives you a total of four bonuses at the start of patch 8.2 (1 major active, and 3 minor passives).

Once you’ve collected an Essence, you infuse your artifact with it in the Heart Forge, learning it permanently. As for the respeccing – you will be able to swap Essence powers at no cost using a new Heart of Azeroth interface within rest areas, cities, or while under a Tome of Quiet Mind effect.

Unlike artifact traits from Legion expansion, essences are more role-focused – they are meant for Tanks, Healers, and Damage Dealers. Some of them are working only for a specific role.

Let’s take a look at some Essences coming in Patch 8.2. Remember, this is early data, and this may change later on, but for now, it will give you some idea of what to expect.
