In the Shadowlands the new location is divided into four zones. Each zone is governed by one of four covenants. During the questline you will be introduced to them, and at the max level you will be able to choose a side of the conflict. Each Covenant gives to the player certain class-specific Covenant ability, a Covenant movement ability, unique transmogs and more. This guide will help you understand the covenant system in more detail.
What are Covenants?
In the new addon you will meet four new factions: Kyrian, Necrolords, Night Fae, and Venthyr. These are the main forces that control the four main locations: Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth. Each of these forces has unique powers and missions, but the one mission is common for all Covenants. They all are designed to help the soul atone for sins and find peace. During the questline you will be introduced to all Covenants, and at the max level you will be able to choose a side of the conflict. Luckily I can introduce you to them right now.
Kyrian
Kyrian — Angelic Soul Guides. We already met them in previous addons. For example, TheVal’kyr are the highest echelon of the Kyrian. Kyrians live in Bastion and value humility, righteousness, service, and virtue. At first sight this Covenant is the best choice for healers and good boys/girls.
Elysian Hold is the Kyrian Covenant Sanctum – an activity hub where players can access such features as the Anima Conductor, the Scouting Map, the Transport Network, and the Path of Ascension. And it is here where you will select and change the Kyrian Covenant Soulbinds. To get into Elysian Hold you will have to finish the Covenant Choice questline, choose the Kyrian Covenant and proceed with the Among the Kyrian quest.
Necrolords
Necrolords —covenant for the strong-willed, strong in body and mind souls. They live in Maldraxxus, but protect all Shadowlands from external forces. The Necrolords believe in the survival of the fittest and do not tolerate the weak one. Necrolords act cruel and cynical, but they are not evil… probably.
Seat of The Primus is a main location for Necrolords. In this hub of activity Necrolord’s members will find the Anima Conductor, the Bone Gates Transport Network, the Scouting Map, and the Abomination Factory, their very own Covenant-specific area. Also you can select and change their Soulbinds here.
Night Fae
Night Fae — the personification of the forces of nature, Shepherds of the Cycle of Life and Death. Similar to Kirian they serve the cycle of death and rebirth that comes to all parts of nature. They live in Ardenweald — the mirror to the Emerald Dream — and ruled by the Winter Queen.
The sanctum of the Night Fae is called the Heart of the Forest. The Heart of the Forest has all main facilities and options for a player – the innkeeper, vendors, post, quest givers, Anima Conductor, the Fae Circles Transport Network, the Scouting Map, a Covenant-specific area, the Queen’s Conservatory, and, of course, the Soulbinds menu.
Venthyr
Venthyr — cruel sadists tormenting weak souls. At the dawn of time they were judges, but unlimited power corrupted them. The Venthyr rule Revendreth — negative Silvermoon. A dark, Gothic-style zone with soaring castle.
If you’re seeking a bit of grace wrapped in a bit of sin, then look no further than the aristocratic and elegant Venthyr Covenant. Every day among them brings punishment and reward—though telling the two apart can get a bit fuzzy. But beneath the polish and refinement, the seeds of rebellion against the master of the realm, Sire Denathrius, lie planted…
Sinfall is the Sanctum of the Venthyr and located in Revendreth. Here you can find Anima Conductor, the Blood Mirror Transportation Network, the Scouting Map, and their very own Covenant-specific area, the Ember Court. In addition, this is where Venthyr Covenant members can select and change their Soulbinds.
Covenants and alts
Shadowlands is supportive for alts, so once you complete the story, reach 60 lvl and choose a Covenant, all subsequent characters you take into the Shadowlands will have the option of choosing a Covenant right from level 50. Your alt can go through the entire storyline and jump right into end-game progression, where you can choose the Covenant you really need. This will allow you not to get acquainted with the Covenants that you already know from the first playthrough. It is very convenient and saves a lot of time
What Covenant to choose
And now, when you know all the Covenants, it’s time to choose the right one that suits you not only in terms of atmosphere, but also in terms of bonuses.
Here you can see the most useful Covenants for all Class and Spec (this guide will be updated every week)

Soulbinds
Soulbinding is a new system of progression in the Shadowlands, but it is similar to a talent tree of your character. All Covenants has three Soulbinds, it’s like your specialisation, but Soulbinds you can change only once per week. Each of the Soulbinds has a unique talent tree of eight rows. Like a specialisation, the Soulbinds comes in various flavors — DPS, survival, or utility, and will correspond to the class and spec of the player. To unlock all of the Soulbinds you will have to make progress in the chosen Covenant Campaign. Soulbinds are unlocked in the following order:
Covenant | First Soulbind Unlocked | Second Soulbind Unlocked | Third Soulbind Unlocked |
Kyrian | Pelagos | Kleia | Mikanikos |
Necrolord | Plague Deviser Marileth | Emeni | Bonesmith Heirmir |
Night Fae | Niya | Dreamweaver | Korayn |
Venthyr | Nadjia | Theotar | General Draven |
To get access to each row of talents players should reach a certain Renown level. You can get a Renown, for example, for completing two weekly quests: Replenish the Reservoir and Return Lost Souls. Soulbind Rows are unlocked at following Renown Levels:
- Renown 2: First Soulbind, 2nd Row
- Renown 4: First Soulbind, 3rd Row
- Renown 5: Second Soulbind, 3rd Row
- Renown 7: First Soulbind, 4th Row
- Renown 10: Second Soulbind, 4th Row
- Renown 13: Second Soulbind, 5th Row
- Renown 16: First Soulbind, 5th Row
- Renown 24: First Soulbind, 6th Row
- Renown 27: Third Soulbind, 6th Row
- Renown 28: Second Soulbind, 6th Row
- Renown 31: First Soulbind, 7th Row
- Renown 32: Second Soulbind, 7th Row
- Renown 35: Third Soulbind, 7th Row
- Renown 39: ALL Soulbinds, 8th Row

Conduits
Conduits are similar to talents from talent tree or essences from BFA. They allow extra customization of the Soulbind talent tree for the selected Covenant. Each particular Conduit can be used once for each Soulbind. Each of them provides one of three groups bonuses: Potency, Endurance, and Finesse.
All Soulbinds have different sets of slots for different types of Conduits, all spread across the 8 rows. In general, each Soulbind has access to 2 Potency Conduit sockets, 3 Endurance and 2 Finesse ones.
Similar to Essences in Battle for Azeroth, Conduits can be obtained from a wide variety of end-stage materials such as local quests, dungeons, reputations, raids, and PvP. All of them will be added to the collection. Therefore, you can swap them. But only once per week
Here below I will give several examples of Conduits for each class.

Covenant Campaign
Talking about meta we completely forgot about the Story of the Covenants. During the Covenant Campaign we will reveal more of their motivations, issues, and objectives. Also we will get a new reputation system, which is called Renown.
Renown
The Renown sticks to a selected Covenant and will become available at level 60 as well as the Covenant itself. This is specific esteem that grows in compliance with gained Renown levels. The higher is your Renown level is, the more Covenant features become available to you. They may be new Soulbinds and their traits, new Campaign quests, Sanctum upgrades, increased ilvl for World Quest rewards, Covenant themed cosmetic rewards (transmogrification sets, pets, mounts, titles, achievements, etc).
Fortunately Renown is not an endless grind. This time (unlike Azerite Power from BfA) it is a finite progression system of only forty levels. Also Renown has a weekly cup you can earn.
Renown is represented by a currency of the same name – Renown. There are four additional Covenant specific currencies, which are Renown-Kyrian, Renown-Venthyr, Renown-Necrolord, and Renown-NightFae. All of them count only towards their specific Covenant.
How to Earn Renown
There are two ways to earn Renown. Each time you complete another Chapter of your Covenant Campaign, you gain a level of Renown. There will be eight chapters within each Covenant Campaign, meaning you will have eight Renown levels.
You will be able to complete two weekly quests, each of which will reward you with one Renown. One is called Replenish the Reservoir, and another Return Lost Souls. On the whole, it will take you not less than 14 weeks to reach the maximum Renown level.
To get more info about Renown Rewards and catching-up mechanism check out our guide about Renown system
Covenant Callings
Battle for Azeroth generally offered 7-9 World Quests per zone. In Shadowlands, zones typically offer only 4-5 World Quests. To fix this disbalance, Blizzard introduced a new type of daily quest with goals and rewards specific to your character’s Covenant — Covenant Callings.
Covenant Callings and World Quests have some similarities and differences.
Similarities:
- Both have time limits ranging from 12 hours to a few days, as determined by the daily reset cycle.
- Both offer valuable rewards that you will want to track regularly.
- Both types offer the same quests to everyone at the same time, regardless of Covenant
Differences:
- World Quests are picked up by going into the quest area and picking up the quest automatically. Callings are picked up by visiting quest givers in your Covenant Sanctum.
- World Quest rewards, goals, and expiration times are tracked on the world map. Callings’ rewards, goals, and expiration times are tracked in your Covenant Sanctum tracker on your minimap.
- When you complete a World Quest, it automatically turns in and gives the reward. Callings must be returned to the quest giver in your Sanctum to receive your reward.
- World Quests give rewards any player can use, regardless of Covenant. Callings offer covenant-specific rewards.
- World Quests show up in the category “World Quests” in your Quest log. Callings show up in the regular “Quests” section.
Covenant Callings will be available as soon as you select your Covenant. If you have a new Covenant Calling available, the Covenant Sanctum report icon will glow and you’ll briefly receive a notification that a new Calling is available. It is very convenient, because you don’t have to return to your Sanctum to see what is available
Covenant Sanctum
Similar to Class Halls in Legion, each covenant in Shadowlands has its Sanctum. Like any other headquarters, a Sanctum has all main facilities and options for a player – the innkeeper, vendors, post, quest givers, Anima Conductor, Transport Network, the Scouting Map, a Covenant-specific area, and, of course, the Soulbinds menu. These will also be the base of operations for your Covenant Campaign.
Covenant | Sanctum |
Kyrian | Elysian Hold |
Necrolords | Seat of The Primus |
Night Fae | Heart of the Forest |
Venthyr | Sinfall |
You will be ejected from the Sanctum of a Covenant where you do not belong.
Covenants rewards and bonuses
Each covenant offers specific bonuses and rewards. We’ll skip the transmog, because we’ve already talked about it, and will talk about pets, mounts, and dungeon bonuses.
