Guardians of the Rift is one of OSRS’s best Runecrafting training methods. This minigame rewards active play with solid XP, Abyssal Pearls, useful Runecrafting upgrades, and rare drops like the Abyssal Needle and Abyssal Protector pet. Getting there is straightforward once you know which teleport or portal route to use.
How to Get to Guardians of the Rift Old School RuneScape:
- Located in the Temple of the Eye, accessible after completing the Temple of the Eye quest.
- Requires Enter the Abyss miniquest and 10 Runecraft to start Temple of the Eye.
- Guardians of the Rift itself requires 27 Runecraft, which the quest naturally unlocks if you start at level 10.
- Fastest travel: Minigame teleport through the Grouping interface or Amulet of the Eye if you already have one.
- Abyssal Pearls are spent at the Temple Supplies shop, while reward searches use elemental and catalytic points.
Where to Get Guardians of the Rift in OSRS
The Guardians of the Rift minigame takes place inside the Temple of the Eye. To access it, complete the Temple of the Eye quest, then use the Grouping minigame teleport, the Wizards’ Tower basement portal, or the Amulet of the Eye if you already have it. Here are the Temple of the Eye travel options:
- Grouping Minigame Teleport — free teleport after unlocking the minigame, with the usual cooldown. This is the simplest option for most players.
- Wizards’ Tower basement portal — use a Necklace of Passage, Fairy Ring DIS, Draynor teleport, or another nearby route, then enter through the portal.
- Amulet of the Eye — use it if you already have the item. It provides a free teleport near the minigame area, but it should not be described as a guaranteed quest reward.
- Mage of Zamorak in south-eastern Varrock — used during Temple of the Eye and Enter the Abyss-related steps. This is not the standard travel route for regular GoTR runs.
Complete Eye of the Storm before your first GoTR session — it’s a short quest (15–20 minutes) that grants the Amulet of the Eye, eliminating all future travel friction to the minigame.
ℹ️ Complete Temple of the Eye before your first GoTR session. The quest introduces the core mechanics and unlocks access to Guardians of the Rift.
How Guardians of the Rift Works
Guardians of the Rift runs in short rounds where players help the Great Guardian close the Abyssal Rift. You mine guardian fragments, turn them into guardian essence at the workbench, craft runes through active altar portals, then bring guardian stones back to power the Great Guardian. Charged cells are used separately to create, repair, or upgrade barriers. Key activities per game:
- Mine guardian fragments from remains around the Temple of the Eye.
- Use the workbench to turn guardian fragments into guardian essence.
- Enter active elemental or catalytic altar portals and craft runes.
- Return guardian stones to the Great Guardian to increase its power.
- Use charged cells on barriers to create, repair, or upgrade temple defences.
| Runecrafting Level | Approx. XP/Hour | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 27–44 | 15,000–25,000 | Early GoTR output; fewer rune unlocks and weaker pouch setup |
| 45–74 | 30,000–45,000 | Better altar access and smoother point flow |
| 75–99 | 50,000–75,000+ | Best results with pouches, stronger portals, and cleaner rotations |
Guardians of the Rift Rewards

OSRS Guardians of the Rift FAQ
Below are the most common questions about accessing and playing Guardians of the Rift in OSRS.
What Quest Do You Need for Guardians of the Rift?
You need to complete Temple of the Eye to access Guardians of the Rift. To start that quest, you must complete Enter the Abyss and have 10 Runecraft. After the quest XP, your account reaches the 27 Runecraft needed to play GoTR.
Is Guardians of the Rift the Best Runecrafting Method?
For many players, GoTR is one of the best Runecrafting methods from 27–99 because it mixes decent XP with useful account upgrades. High-effort methods can still beat it in certain level ranges, but Guardians of the Rift feels much smoother than traditional altar running.
Can You AFK Guardians of the Rift?
Partially — GoTR requires consistent action during its 10-minute cycles but has natural downtime between actions. It’s not as AFK as Motherlode Mine or Wintertodt, but far less click-intensive than traditional altar Runecrafting. Most players describe it as low-effort active play.
How Do You Get the Abyssal Needle?
The Abyssal Needle is a rare drop from the Rewards Guardian, not a shop purchase. It is commonly listed around a 1/300 reward-search drop rate. The Needle is used to create the Colossal Pouch, not the Abyssal Lantern.
What Is the Best Rune to Craft at Guardians of the Rift?
Players choose from the currently active elemental and catalytic altar portals. The best option depends on whether you need elemental points, catalytic points, XP, or better rune value. Your Runecrafting level still affects which altars you can use and how many runes you craft.
Guardians of the Rift makes Runecrafting feel much less painful than regular altar running. The loop of mining, crafting, charging barriers, and powering the Great Guardian keeps each round active without turning it into a click-heavy grind.
