HOME How to get OSRS How to Get to Guardians of the Rift Osrs

Guardians of the Rift is OSRS’s best Runecrafting training method by a wide margin — a minigame that rewards active participation with significantly better XP/hour than traditional altar running, plus a chance at the Abyssal Needle for the Abyssal Lantern and the coveted Abyssal Protector pet. Getting there is straightforward once you know which teleport to use.

  • Located in the Temple of the Eye, accessible after completing the Eye of the Storm quest
  • Requires completing Enter the Abyss miniquest and the Eye of the Storm quest for full access
  • Fastest travel: Minigame teleport (Grouping interface, free, 20-min cooldown) or Amulet of the Eye
  • No minimum Runecrafting level — any level can participate, but higher RC levels give better catalytic rune output
  • Amulet of the Eye (reward from Eye of the Storm) provides unlimited free teleports to the temple

How to Get to Guardians of the Rift in OSRS

The Guardians of the Rift minigame takes place inside the Temple of the Eye, a separate instanced area reached through a portal in the Mage of Zamorak’s area near Varrock. The Eye of the Storm quest (short, low requirements) must be completed for access.

Travel options:

  1. Minigame Teleport (Grouping interface) — free, 20-minute cooldown per teleport. Lands you outside the temple entrance. Best for first sessions.
  2. Amulet of the Eye — a reward from the Eye of the Storm quest, providing unlimited free teleports to the temple entrance with no cooldown. The best long-term method.
  3. Mage of Zamorak north of Varrock — right-click « Teleport » to go to the Wilderness altar area, then use the portal nearby. Requires Enter the Abyss miniquest.
  4. Varrock lodestone — short run north to the Mage of Zamorak area.

ℹ️ Complete Eye of the Storm before your first GoTR session — it’s a short quest (15–20 minutes) that grants the Amulet of the Eye, eliminating all future travel friction to the minigame.

How Guardians of the Rift Works

Guardians of the Rift runs in 10-minute cycles. Players gather essence from nodes inside the temple, craft runes at various altars, and deposit them into an overcharged cell to power the Great Guardian at the centre. Contributing more cells and higher-quality runes earns more Runecrafting XP and reward tokens.

Key activities per game:

  • Mine Rift Guardians for Guardian Essence (the core crafting material)
  • Craft elemental and catalytic runes at active portals (portals cycle every 30 seconds)
  • Power cells are deposited into the Great Guardian to reduce its depleted energy
  • Catalytic and elemental Rune Guardians protect active portals — defeat them to keep portals accessible

OSRS Guardians of the Rift FAQ

Below are the most common questions about accessing and playing Guardians of the Rift in OSRS.

What Quest Do You Need for Guardians of the Rift?

Eye of the Storm is required for full GoTR access and to receive the Amulet of the Eye. The Enter the Abyss miniquest (a very short activity, not a full quest) is also needed. Eye of the Storm has minimal prerequisites and takes roughly 15–20 minutes.

Is Guardians of the Rift the Best Runecrafting Method?

For XP per hour above 75 Runecrafting, GoTR competes with or beats most alternatives including ZMI altar running, and it requires significantly less attention than runner-based methods. Below 75, ZMI may edge it out slightly. For most players, GoTR is the recommended method from 1–99 due to its consistent engagement and reward structure.

Can You AFK Guardians of the Rift?

Partially — GoTR requires consistent action during its 10-minute cycles but has natural downtime between actions. It’s not as AFK as Motherlode Mine or Wintertodt, but far less click-intensive than traditional altar Runecrafting. Most players describe it as low-effort active play.

How Do You Get the Abyssal Needle?

The Abyssal Needle costs 100 Reward Tokens from the Rewards Guardian inside the temple. At roughly 3–5 tokens per game, it takes approximately 20–35 GoTR sessions to afford. The Needle is used with an Abyssal Lantern (and other materials) to create a combined item.

What Is the Best Rune to Craft at Guardians of the Rift?

Players don’t choose a specific rune at GoTR — the active portals cycle and determine which rune type is crafted each round. Your Runecrafting level affects how many runes you craft per essence, but the rune type itself is determined by the game. This is part of what makes GoTR feel like a minigame rather than traditional altar crafting.

Guardians of the Rift transformed Runecrafting from one of OSRS’s most tedious skills into one of its most engaging minigames — the cycle of gathering, crafting, and powering the Guardian keeps sessions moving quickly.
