How do you get reins of the Blue Proto-Drake?

Blue Proto-Drake is an extremely rare drop from Skadi the Ruthless boss fight, on Heroic difficulty of the Utgarde Pinnacle Dungeon. You can skip all the other enemies and bosses prior to Skadi and the fight itself is fairly easy too, as long as you know what to do.

Just kill all the surrounding enemies, until you get three harpoons, then shoot them into Skadi out of ballistas nearby. Once all three harpoons land a hit, Skadi will come down and you’ll be able to finish him off. Sadly, there’s not much you can do to battle the insufferable RNG, other than running the dungeon on your alts.

What is the drop rate of Blue Proto-Drake?

Blue Proto-Drake barely has a 1% drop chance from the Skadi the Ruthless boss, which naturally explains a rather rare status of this mount among the WoW community. Thankfully, the dungeon is pretty old, having come out during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, making it easily soloable for any well-geared player. Still, it’s not uncommon for players to do hundreds of attempts before they can finally get the mounts with drop chances this low.  

Who drops the Blue Proto-Drake?

The Blue Proto-Drake drops from the Skadi the Ruthless, the third boss of the Utgarde Pinnacle dungeon. Thankfully, while the dungeon is fairly linear, you can easily skip the first two bosses and most of the mobs, heading straight to Skadi. To get to the dungeon, look for the Utgarde Keep, located right in the middle of Howling Fjord, Northrend. 

Make sure not to mistake the Utgarde Keep and Utgarde Pinnacle - those are two separate dungeons and you need the latter. Also, make sure to set your difficulty on Heroic, since Blue Proto-Drake simply doesn’t drop on Normal. 

Can you get the Blue Proto-Drake on normal?

Nope, the mount drops only on Heroic difficulty of the Utgarde Pinnacle dungeon. So make sure you switch the difficulty to the appropriate one before going in! You may require dozens and even hundreds of attempts as it is - no need to waste even more of your personal time by doing literally pointless runs. 

How often can you farm Blue Proto-Drake?

Since the mount can only drop on the Heroic difficulty of the dungeon, you’re limited to a single run per day. You can always increase your chances by running the dungeon on your alts, but even this approach can take you weeks and even months before you get the mount. Scary to think how long it might take by casually doing only a single run a day, though.
