The wait might finally be over. World of Warcraft Classic’s Season of Discovery Phase 8 looks ready to unleash one of the most iconic weapons in Warcraft history — the Ashbringer. Recent datamining from the Phase 8 PTR has uncovered a detailed breadcrumb trail hinting at a multi-stage questline that could lead players to reforge the legendary blade.
Corrupted Ashbringer Reappears
Players will remember the Corrupted Ashbringer, last seen in the hands of the Four Horsemen in Naxxramas. On the PTR, however, it’s Scarlet Inquisitor Caldoran who now wields it. He claims the sword rightfully belongs to the Scarlet Crusade and seeks aid in reclaiming the Scarlet Enclave. But soon after, Caldoran appears without the blade — kicking off the journey with a new quest-starting item: the Corrupted Emblem.

Breaking and Reforging the Ashbringer
The Corrupted Emblem suggests the sword shatters during a confrontation, leaving players to recover multiple parts:
- Emblem of the Ashbringer;
- Hilt of the Ashbringer / Hilt of the Ashbringer;
- Possibly the mysterious Lightforged Steel Billet.
Datamining reveals Lightforged components like Ruined Lightforged Blade and Lightforged Iron, as well as items tied to the Light itself — such as the Splinter of Crystallized Light and Crystalline Axe.
All clues point to a legendary blacksmith, hinted at in the Stoneshaper’s Notes, who may be key to reforging the sword into the Reforged Blade of the Ashbringer. However, the reforged weapon is initially an Inert Ashbringer — a hollow shell of its former glory, with a unique “Will of the Ashbringer” activation effect that seems to guide players deeper into the quest.
Which Ashbringer Will We Get?
From the currently available information, we’ve learned that players may receive either a cleansed or corrupted version of the Ashbringer. Here’s what we know so far:
Ashbringer (Cleansed):
- Level 60, ilvl 76;
- Deals Holy and Fire damage;
- On-hit: Blasts enemies for 700 Fire damage.
Corrupted Ashbringer (Sanctified):
- Level 60, ilvl 100;
- Massive lifesteal and critical bonuses;
- On-hit: Steals life from up to 5 enemies and stacks Strength/Agility.
It’s worth noting the corrupted version is far more powerful on the PTR, but that may change before release.
