What are the tiers in world of tanks?

Tiers in World of Tanks are quite interesting, and they refer to the progression of the tanks you can access in the game. But, they also serve a matchmaking function, helping balance the playing field. 

First, let’s talk about tank progression. Tanks more or less follow the historical timeline from tier to tier, with WWI tanks in Tier I and late and experimental WWII tanks appearing in Tier X. However, rather than historical accuracy, the Tier system is more about the in-game power of the tank, with early tiers featuring cheap tanks with light armor and little damage numbers. In contrast, late tiers feature expensive tanks with heavy armor and dealing lots of damage. Think of it as gear progression in an RPG. 

But as we already said, Tiers are also used for matchmaking. Only Tier 1 tanks are available for the new players. Since you need lots of in-game currency to unlock any new tank, it’s generally expected that the higher your tank tier is, the more experience and, thus, skill you possess. 

However, World of Tanks only matches the tanks of the same tier or 2 tiers higher. So, Tier II can play with Tier IV, and Tier VIII can play with Tier X. But you can’t battle against Tier III on your Tier IX tank. In other words, while higher-tier tanks have a stat advantage over lower tiers, they don’t guarantee you victory, as you’ll be playing with players of mostly similar tiers and skill levels.

How many tiers are there in world of tanks?

There are ten tank tiers in World of Tanks, and Tier I is the most basic one, serving as a Tutorial line of tanks for the players to try out the game. Only light tanks and a limited amount of maps are available at this tier. 

Tiers 2-4 are when the game gradually opens up: you get access to more maps and tank classes. It’s also when you start to spot the differences between tanks of different nations. 

Tiers 5-8 are where most of the World of Tanks community plays. The players at these Tiers have a good understanding of the game, but the matches are more or less casual, and players have a larger margin for mistakes. This is also where you have the most variety in terms of tank classes and maps. 

Tiers 9-10 are for hardcore tanks with hardcore players in control, with barely any light and medium tanks around. Every player controls large, unwieldy, terrifying death machines, and a single mistake can lead to your destruction. This is where the game’s ultimate challenge lies and where you’ll find most of the game’s best players. Though, it’s worth mentioning that even many game veterans prefer to play on lower tiers, where the games are much more casual and less punishing. 

Is tank tier reflective of the player’s skill in wot?

Yes and no, leaning a bit more towards the former. You can’t advance through the Tiers without XP, which can only be acquired by participating in the matches. Each new tier also requires more XP to unlock than the previous one. So, the higher the tier tank you have, the more time you must’ve spent in the game, which should mean that you have a better knowledge about it, at least in theory. 

However, just because someone has played the game more doesn’t necessarily mean they are better at it. And it’s also worth keeping in mind that: 

1. The player on the Tier 10 tank might’ve just unlocked it and is still trying to learn it
2. The player on the lower tier tank might be a veteran player who owns and comfortably can play a higher tier tank but currently chose to go for the lower tier.

All in all, it’s reasonable to assume the player’s average level of experience based on their tier, but the tier of the tank alone doesn’t determine whether someone is better or worse than others.

How do you advance through the tiers in wot?

All the tanks in the game are presented in the form of tech trees, separate for each nation. To unlock the new tank of the higher tier, you need to complete the research of the tank preceding it. Once you’ve researched all the upgrades for one of your currently available tanks, you’ll see that the tank of the next tier became available for research, too. Though of course, you must also purchase the tank to use and upgrade it further after researching it. 

To keep things simple, to progress through the tiers, you need credits and tank/free XP. Both earned from participation in the matches, so the answer to the tier progression is a grind, grind, and, once more, grind. The only notable way to skip at least some of the grinds is by immediately upgrading the tank for gold. However, you still need XP to research the next-tier tank.
