This WoW Forever beginner guide collects practical tips for new players who start their first character after the November 4, 2026 launch. WoW Forever is built on Classic, but it changes hundreds of talents and spells. It also adds new dungeons, a new race, Legacy Points, and campsites, so even returning Classic players will meet some unfamiliar systems. The tips below follow the order in which you will face these systems, from the first login screen to level 60. If you are still setting up your account, our What to Do Before WoW Forever Release guide covers the preparation steps.
WoW Forever Beginner Guide Key Takeaways:
- The Enhanced Experience Preset is the easier choice for a new player in WoW Forever, as it turns on quest markers, One-bag, and HD models, and you can switch it later in Options.
- Your ruleset and faction decide who you can group with, since parties, guilds, dungeons, and raids work only inside one ruleset and one faction.
- WoW Forever has no automatic dungeon queue and no Meeting Stone summons, so you will build groups through the listing tool and walk to every entrance.
- Your first mount comes at level 40, where Apprentice Riding costs 100 gold, and dual spec opens at the same level.
- Raids open on December 9, 2026, and Onyxia’s Lair needs a Drakefire Amulet in the bags of every player in the raid.
- This new player guide links to our detailed guides on classes, professions, mounts, camping, and Legacy, so you can read more about each system when you reach it.
WoW Forever Beginner Tips Before You Start Playing
The first WoW Forever beginner tips concern three choices you make before entering the world: the Experience Preset, the ruleset, and your class and race. Two of them are hard to undo, so it is worth spending a few minutes on each one.
Choosing a WoW Forever Experience Preset
The WoW Forever Experience Preset appears on your first login, before the ruleset screen, and it is shown only once. Here’s how the two presets differ:
- Classic: it keeps SD character models, turns off quest markers and objective highlights on the map, and uses the original bags and user interface layout.
- Enhanced: it switches on HD models, quest markers, objective highlights, One-bag, and Transmog, and it moves the user interface to a centered layout with strafe keybinds.
Blizzard recommends Enhanced if you are not sure, and we agree, because quest markers save a lot of time while you learn the zones. You can change the individual settings later under Game Menu > Options, although the preset selection screen appears only on your first login.
Choosing a WoW Forever Ruleset
A WoW Forever ruleset is chosen for each character, and the launch offers Normal, PvP, Roleplay, and Roleplay-PvP, while Hardcore will come later. Groups, guilds, dungeons, and raids only work with players of the same ruleset and the same faction. Thus, it is advisable to agree on both with your friends before anyone creates a character. Normal is the best place to learn the game, since other players cannot attack you unless you turn on PvP yourself.
Read more about rulesets, names, and appearance in our WoW Forever Character Creation Guide.
Choosing a WoW Forever Class and Race
The WoW Forever class you pick decides your playstyle, because WoW Forever adds 114 new talents and changes 299 talents and 263 spells across nine classes. If you want an easy start, our Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever tier list names Beast Mastery Hunter as the easiest leveling spec for new players. You can then compare racial bonuses in our WoW Forever Best Races guide.
The new Skyborne race is available with the Heroic Pack or higher. It starts on Zephras Isle, a starting zone that covers levels 1-12. Also, Blizzard advises trying another class if the first one does not feel right, as a few early levels are a quick way to test a playstyle.
WoW Forever Tips for New Players at Levels 1-20
These WoW Forever tips for new players cover the first 20 levels, where you learn quests, controls, travel, and the cost of dying. These are the systems you will use on every level, from the first quest to level 60.
Reading Quests and Enemy Levels in WoW Forever
Quests in WoW Forever are marked with a yellow “!” when they are available and a “?” when they are ready to turn in. The quest text often names the exact spot of the objective, so it is worth reading it before you head to the objective. Enemies and quests do not scale to your level. Green and yellow quests are safe for solo play, while orange and red ones usually need a group or a few more levels.
Learning the Key WoW Forever Hotkeys
WoW Forever hotkeys open the windows you’ll use every few minutes, and you can rebind them in Options under Keybindings. The table below lists the default keys:
| Key | Window | What You Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| P | Spellbook | Dragging new spells to your action bars |
| C | Character | Checking gear, stats, and durability |
| K | Professions | Crafting and checking profession skill |
| M | World Map | Finding quest areas and your corpse |
| L | Quest Log | Tracking, untracking, and abandoning quests |
Moving the spells you use most to keys near your movement keys is very helpful, since clicking abilities with the mouse slows you down in every fight.
Setting Your WoW Forever Hearthstone and Flight Paths
Your WoW Forever Hearthstone returns you to the inn where you set it, with a 10-sec cast and a 1-hour cooldown. Talk to the Innkeeper in the town where you quest the most, so the Hearthstone brings you back to your quest hubs. There are no portal rooms in the capitals, and you will travel between continents by zeppelin or ship unless a Mage opens a portal for you. It is advisable to talk to every flight master you pass, because a flight path only works once you have discovered both ends of it. Our WoW Forever Traveling Guide lists the main routes.
Training Spells and Weapon Skills in WoW Forever
WoW Forever class trainers teach new spells and ranks as you level, usually every two levels. Visit your class trainer regularly to unlock new abilities, but save some gold for training costs. Weapon skills work the same way, as weapon masters in the capital cities teach new weapon types for a fee. A new weapon skill starts at 1, so you will miss often until you raise it on weaker enemies.
Some abilities are not sold by trainers at all and come from class quests, such as Druid Bear and Cat Form or Shaman totems. By the way, our WoW Forever Class Quests service unlocks these spells for you, with every travel leg of the quest chain covered.
Getting Your First Bags in WoW Forever
Bags in WoW Forever decide how long you can quest before a trip to a vendor. Most races have an early quest in their starting area that gives a 6-slot bag at around level 4, so it’s worth looking for it. Gray items are safe to sell, and the vendor’s Buyback tab returns an item you sold by mistake. Keep unknown items and recipes in your bank, since many of them are new in WoW Forever and can be worth more on the Auction House.
What Happens When You Die in WoW Forever
Dying in WoW Forever turns you into a ghost at the nearest graveyard, and you will need to run back to your body to resurrect. Follow the corpse marker on the minimap and choose Resurrect once you get close. The Spirit Healer at the graveyard can bring you back on the spot, but it damages the durability of your equipment further and can apply Resurrection Sickness.
While Resurrection Sickness is active, your character is much weaker, so wait until it expires before the next fight. Also, repair your gear at a vendor with the anvil icon.
WoW Forever Leveling Tips for Levels 20-40
WoW Forever leveling tips for levels 20-40 focus on speed and money, since this is where you start running dungeons, pick professions, and save for your first mount. The zone order for this range is covered in our WoW Forever Leveling Guide, so this section only covers the systems around it.
Using Rested XP and Camping in WoW Forever
Rested XP in WoW Forever doubles the experience you get from killing enemies until the bonus runs out. You gain it while resting in an inn or a capital city, at 5% of a level per 8 hours, up to 150% of a level. Campsites are a new way to rest out in the world. A Camp Tent made by Leatherworking raises your Rested XP to 5% of a level when you place it next to a Campfire, and other players can share buffs and trade at the same camp.
Read more about tents, campfires, and campsite features in our WoW Forever Camping Guide.
Finding Groups for WoW Forever Dungeons
WoW Forever dungeons need a group of five players, and the game does not have an automatic dungeon queue. The group tool only lists groups that players create, and Meeting Stones do not summon players. Everyone walks to the entrance unless a Warlock in the group casts Ritual of Summoning. Most of the experience in a dungeon comes from its quests, so take every dungeon quest before you enter. Below you can see the new dungeons with their level ranges:
| Dungeon | Level Range |
|---|---|
| Hall of Thanes | 13-18 |
| Ruins of Lordaeron | 15-20 |
| Excavation Site: Wetlands | 24–29 |
| City of Dalaran | 28-33 |
| The Drowned City | 35-40 |
| Krol’dok Stronghold | 40-45 |
| Alcaz Prison | 48-53 |
| Blackmaw Hold | 55-60 |
| Shaper’s Terrace | 58-60 |
The other 26 dungeons and wings come from Classic, while these nine are new to WoW Forever. Want to see your first new dungeon without searching for a group? Our WoW Forever Hall of Thanes run clears the dungeon from level 13 with every available quest inside done.
Picking WoW Forever Professions as a Beginner
WoW Forever professions let you learn two primary professions and all three secondary ones, which are Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid. A gathering profession paired with the crafting profession that uses its materials is a good choice for a beginner. Here are the classic pairs:
- Herbalism and Alchemy: Alchemy uses herbs to make potions and elixirs for leveling.
- Skinning and Leatherworking: This pair suits classes that wear leather or mail and also makes armor kits for everyone.
- Mining and Blacksmithing: ore turns into plate armor, weapons, and sharpening stones.
- Two gathering professions: this choice can earn a lot of gold, since you sell every material on the Auction House.
First Aid is worth leveling on every character, because bandages heal you between fights without Mana. Our WoW Forever Professions hub has a separate guide for each profession.
Saving Gold for Your First WoW Forever Mount
Your first WoW Forever mount becomes available at level 40 from the riding trainer of your race. Apprentice Riding costs 100 gold and gives 60% speed, and a mount from the vendor next to the trainer costs about 20 gold more. Thus, the best option is to have around 120 gold ready by level 40, which means skipping expensive Auction House purchases while leveling.
Paladins from both factions and Warlocks can unlock their level 40 class mounts through quests instead of purchasing a regular mount. These include the Tome of Nobility for Alliance Paladins and the Warlock quest from Strahad Farsan in Ratchet.
We can also handle the riding training and the mount for you. Our WoW Forever Mounts Unlock service covers both the riding skill and the mount, at 60% speed for level 40 or 100% speed for level 60. You can find every racial mount and its vendor in our WoW Forever Mounts Guide.
WoW Forever Beginner Tips for Levels 40-60
WoW Forever beginner tips for levels 40-60 prepare your character for the endgame, which includes dual spec, Legacy Points, guilds, raids, and PvP. At this point, you can also start thinking about which role you want to play at level 60.
Setting Up WoW Forever Dual Spec
WoW Forever Dual Specialization becomes available at level 40, according to Blizzard. You learn it as Learn a Second Talent Specialization from a class trainer in one of the major cities, and the same trainers handle all talent changes, including Legacy talents. Switching between the two specs takes 5 seconds and does not work in combat. The gold price of the second spec has not been announced yet. A solo build is a good choice for the second spec, as it lets you keep questing alone between dungeon runs.
Upgrading Gear Before Level 60 in WoW Forever
Gear in WoW Forever comes from quests, dungeons, crafting, and the Auction House, and you should compare every new item in its tooltip before you equip it. Item quality is only one factor, because armor type, weapon type, and stats decide how useful an item is for your class. Also, keep some gold for repairs, as gear loses durability when you die, and the Spirit Healer damages it further.
The Reinforce Legacy perk also helps by reducing durability loss from death by 8% per rank, up to 40% at rank five. Gold runs low quickly between training, repairs, and the Auction House. You can top up with WoW Forever Gold on any ruleset and for either faction. Our How to Gear Up in WoW Forever guide lists the best sources for each level range.
Spending WoW Forever Legacy Points
WoW Forever Legacy Points are an account-wide reward for completing challenges, such as reaching level 25, 45, or 60 on a class or a profession skill milestone, and each challenge gives one point. The Legacy System unlocks when you earn your first Legacy Point, usually at level 25. You can also unlock it through a crafting profession at 150 skill or by exploring the entire world map.
After that, every character can spend up to 16 points on perks that speed up leveling, professions, and travel. Since the points are shared, a challenge done on your main also helps every future alt. Read more in our WoW Forever Legacy System Guide.
Joining a WoW Forever Guild
A WoW Forever guild is a good way to find dungeon groups, since there is no automatic queue and the group tool depends on other players. It is very helpful to join a guild before level 60, because raids need 10, 20, or 40 players and guilds plan them. Look for a guild on your own ruleset and faction with a schedule that suits you, since guilds cannot mix rulesets or factions, and ask in chat or in the official WoW Portal Room on Discord.
Preparing for WoW Forever Raids and Onyxia Attunement
WoW Forever raids open on December 9, 2026, five weeks after launch, so you have time to reach 60 without rushing. The first raids are the Barrow Deeps for 10 players, Hyjal Summit for 20 players, and Onyxia’s Lair for 40 players, and all of them reset weekly. For Onyxia’s Lair, every player needs a Drakefire Amulet, which requires level 50 and comes from a faction quest chain that goes through Blackrock Spire. The Drakefire Amulet only has to be in your bags, so you do not need to wear it.
That chain takes several Blackrock runs and a long list of quests, so it is a good idea to start it soon after level 50. Need the attunement done before your first raid night? Our WoW Forever Onyxia’s Lair Attunement skips the whole chain and puts the Drakefire Amulet in your bag.
Trying WoW Forever PvP on Darkspear Islands
WoW Forever PvP for new players starts on Darkspear Islands, a new 15v15 battleground for levels 30-60. Teams fight over four capture points and a central flag, and the first team to 2,000 points wins. You can join from battlemasters in the capitals or at the faction bases, and its reputation gives extra rewards and a tabard at Exalted. Our WoW Forever Darkspear Islands guide explains the map and tactics.
WoW Forever Common Beginner Mistakes
WoW Forever common beginner mistakes mostly cost you time and gold, and each one has a simple fix. The table below lists seven mistakes new players make, with the cost of each and its fix:
| Mistake | What It Costs | How to Fix It |
|---|---|---|
| Picking a different ruleset than your friends | You cannot group, run dungeons, or join their guild | Agree on ruleset and faction before creating characters |
| Skipping flight masters | Long runs between zones later | Talk to every flight master you pass |
| Taking orange and red quests solo | Deaths, repairs, and lost time | Stay on green and yellow quests or find a group |
| Using the Spirit Healer after every death | Durability loss and Resurrection Sickness | Run back to your corpse |
| Entering dungeons without their quests | Most of the dungeon experience | Collect the quests before traveling to the entrance |
| Spending all gold on the Auction House | No money for training and the level 40 mount | Keep around 120 gold aside for level 40 |
| Selling unknown items to vendors | Lost recipes and valuable materials | Sell only gray items and check the rest first |
The ruleset mistake is the hardest to fix, since a character cannot move to another ruleset after creation, so it comes first in the table.
