HOME WoW Forever Classes Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever

The best leveling class in WoW Forever is the one that kills enemies quickly, rarely stops to eat or drink, and survives a bad pull without dying. Our WoW Forever leveling tier list ranks all 27 specializations from S to D for leveling from level 1 to 60. The placements are based on each spec’s talents, trainer spells, and tested play. This ranking focuses on specs rather than whole classes, so for the overall PvE picture, read our WoW Forever Best Classes guide.

WoW Forever Best Leveling Class Key Takeaways:

  • Beast Mastery Hunter, Frost Mage, and Affliction Warlock make up S Tier of WoW Forever leveling tier list.
  • Hunter is the best leveling class in WoW Forever overall, since all three Hunter specs sit in S or A Tier and get a pet through Tame Beast at level 10.
  • Affliction Warlock is the best solo leveling spec because Drain Life, Life Tap, and a demon let it fight with almost no breaks.
  • Beast Mastery Hunter is the best WoW Forever leveling spec for new players, as the pet holds enemies while you attack from range.
  • Healing specs sit in D Tier for solo questing, so most healers level as a damage spec or in dungeon groups.

WoW Forever Leveling Tier List

Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever

Our WoW Forever leveling tier list places Beast Mastery Hunter, Frost Mage, and Affliction Warlock in S Tier, while healing specs sit in D Tier because their damage is too low for quick solo questing. Here are all 27 specs sorted by how fast and how safely they take a character from level 1 to 60:

TierWoW Forever Leveling Specs
SBeast Mastery Hunter, Frost Mage, Affliction Warlock
AMarksmanship Hunter, Survival Hunter, Retribution Paladin, Feral Druid, Enhancement Shaman, Demonology Warlock, Fire Mage
BArcane Mage, Destruction Warlock, Elemental Shaman, Shadow Priest, Combat Rogue, Protection Paladin
CAssassination Rogue, Subtlety Rogue, Arms Warrior, Fury Warrior, Protection Warrior, Balance Druid
DHoly Paladin, Holy Priest, Discipline Priest, Restoration Shaman, Restoration Druid

Higher tiers mean less downtime and safer pulls, while lower tiers remain playable for leveling but need more breaks for Health or Mana. Leveling any spec takes many hours, so if you’d rather spend them in endgame, our WoW Forever Power Leveling takes your character from its current level to the one you choose through quests and dungeons.

How We Rank Leveling Specs in WoW Forever

We rank WoW Forever leveling specs by six criteria that decide how many quests you can finish in an hour of play:

  • Downtime: how often the spec stops to eat, drink, or wait for cooldowns between pulls.
  • AoE: whether the spec can kill several enemies at once, which matters in crowded quest areas and dungeons.
  • Sustain: self-healing, shields, and Health or Mana conversion that keep you fighting without a break.
  • Mobility: slows, speed boosts, and instant spells that help you travel between objectives and escape bad pulls.
  • Pet: a beast or demon that takes damage for you is the most reliable safety tool for solo leveling.
  • Gear dependence: melee specs lose more speed with a weak weapon, while casters rely more on talents and spell ranks.

The XP curve in WoW Forever is close to Classic, as the developers reported an average of 20.5 hours to reach level 20 against 20.4 hours in Classic. Thus, the strengths of each spec are the main factor in your leveling speed.

WoW Forever Best Leveling Class

The WoW Forever best leveling class is Hunter, since all three of its specs sit in the upper tiers and each of them gets a pet at level 10. Here is how the nine classes rank when we take the best leveling spec in WoW Forever of each:

  1. Hunter — Beast Mastery Hunter, S Tier.
  2. Mage — Frost Mage, S Tier.
  3. Warlock — Affliction Warlock, S Tier.
  4. Paladin — Retribution Paladin, A Tier.
  5. Druid — Feral Druid, A Tier.
  6. Shaman — Enhancement Shaman, A Tier.
  7. Priest — Shadow Priest, B Tier.
  8. Rogue — Combat Rogue, B Tier.
  9. Warrior — Arms Warrior or Fury Warrior, C Tier.

The same three classes lead the leveling picks in our WoW Forever Best Classes guide, while Warlock sits lower on that overall list because it falls behind in raids.

S-Tier Leveling Specs

S-Tier leveling specs in WoW Forever level faster and more safely than the rest, as each of them can fight almost nonstop and handle an extra enemy without dying.

Beast Mastery Hunter

Beast Mastery Hunter is the strongest leveling spec in WoW Forever because its pet holds enemies while you deal damage from range. Tame Beast and Call Pet are learned at level 10, and Mend Pet follows at level 12, so the main tool of the spec arrives early.

At level 25, the Summon Hawk talent adds a second companion that spawns at your target. This hawk shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot, so you’ll use one or the other. Hunter pets in WoW Forever also gain Expertise and critical strike chance from their owner, which keeps them useful as you level.

Downtime stays very low, since the pet does most of the work while your Mana recovers between shots. The main downside of Beast Mastery Hunter for leveling is that its AoE is weaker than that of Frost Mage, so it works best when you pull one or two enemies at a time.

You can learn the full kit in our WoW Forever Beast Mastery Hunter Guide.

Frost Mage

Frost Mage is the fastest WoW Forever leveling spec for players who pull large groups, since it slows and freezes enemies before killing them with AoE spells. Gathering several enemies and finishing them together is easy with Frost Nova, Cone of Cold at level 26, and Blizzard. In addition, the new Frost Blast at level 24 adds another slow. Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost also give Frost a way to deal damage on the move.

Mages conjure their own food and water, and rank 6 of Conjure Food now makes 20 items, so a Frost Mage spends no Gold on supplies. Mage Armor lets 50% of your Mana regeneration continue while casting, compared to 30% in Classic, which shortens drinking breaks between AoE pulls. On the other hand, Frost Mage has low Health and cloth armor, so a missed Frost Nova can still end in a death.

More details are in our WoW Forever Frost Mage Guide.

Affliction Warlock

Affliction Warlock is the best solo leveling spec in WoW Forever because its DoTs and demons let it fight with almost no breaks. You can apply Corruption and Bane of Agony to one enemy, channel Drain Life on another, and let the Voidwalker hold the attention of both. Life Tap converts more Health into Mana than in Classic, so Life Tap covers your Mana while Drain Life restores your Health between pulls.

Drain Soul now always gives a Soul Shard when it finishes off an enemy that grants XP, which removes the need to farm shards for your demons. Later, Summon Felhunter at level 30 adds a pet that can stop enemy casters. Affliction kills single targets more slowly than Beast Mastery Hunter. However, it rarely dies and needs few breaks, so its average leveling speed remains very high.

Check our WoW Forever Affliction Warlock Guide for builds and rotation.

A-Tier Leveling Specs

A-Tier leveling specs in WoW Forever reach S-Tier speed in some level ranges, although they need a key talent, a trained spell, or a good weapon before they get there. Most of them are melee or hybrid specs that trade some speed for armor or self-healing.

Marksmanship Hunter

Marksmanship Hunter keeps the Hunter pet and adds more serious ranged damage, which makes it a strong leveling option in WoW Forever. Aimed Shot is now trained at level 20 and no longer needs a talent, while Multi-Shot hits 3 targets with a 6-sec cooldown. Marksmanship hits harder per shot than Beast Mastery. Its pet holds enemies less reliably, which is why it sits one tier lower.

Read our WoW Forever Marksmanship Hunter Guide for the full build.

Survival Hunter

Survival Hunter works as a melee leveling spec in WoW Forever, with traps and a pet that make it safer than most other melee options. Traps now have a 30-sec cooldown and can be placed in combat, Disengage arrives at level 20, and the Strider Kick talent and Lacerate become available at level 30. Survival needs a good two-handed weapon for steady damage, so it levels more slowly than the ranged Hunter specs until you find one.

Retribution Paladin

Retribution Paladin is a sturdy WoW Forever leveling spec because it wears heavy armor and heals itself between fights. The new Holy Strike gives Retribution an active melee attack that has a shorter cooldown and more damage. Also, Consecration and Blessing of Kings are trained from level 20 and no longer need talents. Although Paladins rarely die while questing, they still need to drink after long fights, since most of their damage and healing costs Mana.

Feral Druid

Feral Druid is one of the most flexible leveling specs in WoW Forever because it can switch between damage and tanking forms in one fight and heal itself between pulls.

Cat Form and the first rank of Shred are learned at level 20, and Omen of Clarity is now trained at the same level, so it no longer takes a talent point. Shifting Power converts Mana into Energy. Also, Druids can now drink Mana Potions in Cat Form and Bear Form, which shortens the breaks between pulls.

Feral speed depends on Cat Form, so the spec feels slow before level 20, while Bear Form from the class quest at level 10 helps it survive until then. By the way, our WoW Forever Class Quests service completes the full chain you pick and puts the spell reward on your character without the travel between trainers and capitals.

Enhancement Shaman

Enhancement Shaman is a melee leveling spec in WoW Forever that becomes stronger after level 30. Stormstrike has moved to tier 4 of the talent tree, so you reach it earlier than in Classic, while Windfury Weapon is learned at level 30.

Most totems now last 5 minutes and cover a 30-yard radius, which means you can place them once and fight through several pulls. Shamans can heal themselves between fights, although Enhancement spends a lot of Mana on shocks and heals, which keeps it below the S-Tier specs.

Demonology Warlock

Demonology Warlock keeps the safety of the Warlock pet and makes it stronger, which places it in A Tier for WoW Forever leveling. Soul Link works with your demon again, so part of the damage you take goes to the pet. Alternatively, Demonic Sacrifice now lasts 2 hours, so you can sacrifice a demon for a long buff and still quest through a whole session. Demonology deals less damage over time than Affliction while leveling, so it ranks one tier lower.

Fire Mage

Fire Mage has strong burst damage, which makes it a fast but less safe leveling option in WoW Forever. Fireball and Flamestrike kill enemies quickly, while Heating Up makes your next Pyroblast cast faster after critical strikes. Frostfire Bolt arrives at level 40 and adds a slow to a Fire damage spell. As a result, you no longer need to switch to Frost spells to slow an enemy. Fire has fewer ways to stop enemies than Frost, so it suits players who pull one or two enemies at a time.

Our WoW Forever Fire Mage Guide covers its talents in detail.

B-Tier Leveling Specs

B-Tier leveling specs in WoW Forever offer decent questing speed, but Mana breaks, limited self-healing, or lower damage keep them behind the top picks. These specs can still level solo without major trouble.

Arcane Mage

Arcane Mage has strong burst from Arcane Blast, while Arcane Explosion is a little weaker than in Classic. As a result, Arcane spends more Mana per kill than Frost and drinks more often.

Destruction Warlock

Destruction Warlock is a fast single-target option with Shadow Bolt and Immolate. Still, it lacks the steady drain healing of Affliction and takes more damage when a pull goes wrong.

Elemental Shaman

Elemental Shaman gets the new Lava Burst talent at level 30, and Chain Lightning now costs about 35% less Mana. Still, the spec has no pet and little armor, so it needs a break after every couple of fights.

Shadow Priest

Shadow Priest relies on Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast, and Power Word: Shield for safe pulls, while the new Dark Sacrifice turns Health into Mana between fights. Shadowform lowers the Mana cost of Shadow spells by 50%, although it blocks healing spells.

Combat Rogue

Combat Rogue is the best Rogue leveling spec thanks to Sinister Strike damage and Blade Flurry against two enemies. However, Rogues have no self-healing and have to eat after many fights.

Protection Paladin

Protection Paladin can quest well with Hammer of the Righteous, which hits up to 4 targets, and Seal of Fury. Also, Templar’s Bulwark absorbs damage equal to 100% of your maximum Health for 8 sec. Its damage is lower than that of Retribution, but it can pull large groups of weak enemies safely.

C-Tier Leveling Specs

C-Tier leveling specs in WoW Forever take longer to finish solo quests, mainly because they depend on weapons, lack reliable sustain, or need more time to kill enemies. They remain playable, especially with a leveling partner.

Assassination Rogue

Assassination Rogue gets Mutilate only at level 30, so it plays like a weaker Combat Rogue for most of the early levels, and it shares the lack of self-healing that makes Rogues eat after many fights.

Subtlety Rogue

Subtlety Rogue relies on Stealth and Ambush openers, which are strong for the first hit and slow when you fight one enemy after another.

Arms Warrior

Arms Warrior has Mortal Strike and the new Victory Rush, which heals 10% of your maximum Health within 20 sec of a kill. Even so, Warriors eat after most pulls and depend heavily on their weapon.

Fury Warrior

Fury Warrior deals more damage than Arms with two weapons, and Gore Drinker adds some self-healing. The spec still loses a lot of Health per fight and needs strong weapons to level quickly.

Protection Warrior

Protection Warrior is safe thanks to Vanguard, which lets you Charge in Defensive Stance, and to stronger Revenge and Shield Slam, while its damage is too low for solo questing.

Balance Druid

Balance Druid has a cheaper Wrath and gets Insect Swarm at level 25, while Moonkin Form no longer allows healing, so Balance loses the self-healing that keeps other Druids safe.

D-Tier Leveling Specs

D-Tier leveling specs in WoW Forever are the slowest choices for solo questing, as their healing tools do not make up for low damage. They perform better when leveling through dungeons with a group.

Healing Specs

Healing specs include Holy Paladin, Holy Priest, Discipline Priest, Restoration Shaman, and Restoration Druid. They rarely die because of their healing, while their damage is too low for solo questing. Healers level best in dungeon groups, where Penance, Riptide, Wild Growth, and Holy Shock, now trained at level 30, keep the party alive.

Best WoW Forever Leveling Spec for New Players

Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever

Beast Mastery Hunter is the best WoW Forever leveling spec for beginners, since the pet keeps enemies busy when you make a mistake and you can learn the game from range. A new player doesn’t need to manage stances, combo points, or form switching, so more attention goes to quests and the map. Other good options for new players are:

  • Retribution Paladin — it has few buttons, heavy armor, and healing spells for emergencies.
  • Affliction Warlock — its slow, steady fights leave time to plan the next pull.
  • Frost Mage — a good choice once you learn to kite, since Frost Nova and slows keep enemies away from you.

WoW Forever also has Legacy perks that help with new characters. Talented moves your first talent point down to level 5, while Well Rested raises rested XP gain and its cap by 4% per rank, up to 20% in total. Legacy points come from challenges that open once your first character reaches level 25, and our WoW Forever Legacy Points Boosting completes the challenges you choose on your character, allowing you to unlock these perks faster.

Read more about Legacy perks and points in our WoW Forever Legacy System guide.

WoW Forever Best Solo Leveling Specs

Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever

The best leveling class in WoW Forever for solo questing is Warlock, as Affliction can kill several enemies in a row without stopping for food or water. Our top solo choices are:

  • Affliction Warlock — DoTs, Drain Life, and a Voidwalker keep you fighting with almost no downtime.
  • Beast Mastery Hunter — the pet holds enemies while you attack from range, which makes most quests safe.
  • Retribution Paladin — heavy armor and self-healing make it hard to kill, even when you pull an extra enemy.
  • Feral Druid — forms give you a way out of most bad fights, from Bear Form for defense to Travel Form at level 30.

Rested XP makes solo questing in WoW Forever faster, since it builds when you log out in an inn or a capital and doubles kill XP until it runs out. Solo questing becomes much faster at level 40, when Apprentice Riding becomes available for about 100 Gold and gives 60% movement speed.

Paladins and Warlocks can get their first mounts, Summon Warhorse and Summon Felsteed, through class quests. Most characters are short on Gold at this level, and our WoW Forever Mounts Unlock covers the cost of riding training and delivers the mount that comes with it.

WoW Forever Dungeon Leveling Specs

Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever

Frost Mage is the strongest WoW Forever spec for AoE leveling, as it can freeze a large group of enemies and kill them with Blizzard and Cone of Cold. In dungeons, the best leveling specs are the ones that fill a group role. Protection Paladin, Protection Warrior, and any healer will find a group faster than another damage dealer.

Dungeon XP also favors kills over quests, as kill XP inside dungeons was raised by about 20% while bonus XP from dungeon quests was cut by 50%. Wailing Caverns is a good first dungeon for leveling, since it is built for levels 17–24 and has several quests inside.

Our WoW Forever Wailing Caverns run clears the full dungeon and completes all available quests inside with their rewards and XP, which helps your character level faster in the early levels.

WoW Forever Best Duo Leveling Specs

Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever

The best WoW Forever duo leveling combinations pair a sturdy character with a strong damage dealer, so one player holds the enemies while the other kills them. Two players split the XP from each kill, but they finish group quests much faster and rarely stop for a break. Our recommended pairs are:

  • Protection Paladin + Frost Mage — from level 40, Hammer of the Righteous hits up to 4 enemies and keeps them on the Paladin, while Blizzard and Cone of Cold finish them.
  • Affliction Warlock + Beast Mastery Hunter — two pets hold enemies, and both players attack from range with little downtime.
  • Retribution Paladin + Fury Warrior — Paladin healing covers the Warrior’s lack of self-healing between pulls, while Blessing of Kings raises the stats of both players by 10%.
  • Shadow Priest + Combat Rogue — Power Word: Shield and healing keep the Rogue alive, which removes most of its downtime.
  • Two Frost Mages — both players pull large groups, freeze them, and kill them with stacked AoE.

Duo leveling helps Warriors and Rogues the most, since a healer or a second damage dealer removes most of the downtime that keeps them in the lower tiers.

Leveling Speed vs Level 60 Power in WoW Forever

Leveling speed vs level 60 power in WoW Forever matters most for Warlocks, Warriors, and healers, because their best leveling spec differs from their main endgame spec. For example, Affliction Warlock is in S Tier for leveling, while all three Warlock specs sit in B Tier of our WoW Forever DPS Ranking. Protection Warrior and every healing spec are slow while leveling, yet raid groups need them at level 60. Here is how each class usually switches specs:

ClassBest Leveling SpecCommon Level 60 Specs
WarlockAfflictionAffliction, Demonology, Destruction
WarriorArms or FuryProtection, Fury
PriestShadowHoly, Discipline
PaladinRetributionProtection, Holy, Retribution
DruidFeralRestoration, Feral
ShamanEnhancementElemental, Enhancement, Restoration

Hunters and Mages can keep one spec from level 1 to 60, while the other classes usually reset talents once they reach the level cap. Talent resets happen at the trainer of your class. If you want to start endgame without the leveling stage, our WoW Forever Starter Pack delivers a level 60 character ready for endgame, with a mount and professions included.
