WoW Forever Hall of Thanes (HoT) is a new five-player dungeon for levels 13–18, hidden beneath Ironforge in Old Ironforge. Alliance characters can also finish five quests here, while Horde characters can take two. Below you’ll find the entrance, the quests for both factions, the dangerous trash packs, a tactic for every boss, and the full loot table. If you are still planning your route to level 60, our WoW Forever Leveling Guide shows where this dungeon fits among the other early instances.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Key Takeaways:
- Hall of Thanes is a level 13–18 dungeon, and you can pick up its quests from level 9 or 10, while every boss drop requires level 13.
- The entrance is inside Ironforge, and you reach it by entering the High Seat, taking the open door on the left into Old Ironforge, and following the path down to the portal.
- The four bosses come in a fixed order: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder, and Durgen Dirgehammer.
- Alliance characters can complete five quests for 13,300 XP in total, while Horde characters can take only An Ancient Grudge and Important Heirlooms for 5,250 XP.
- Each boss drops three Rare, Bind on Pickup items of item level 18, and the best quest rewards come from Old Ironforge Incursion.
- Check the vaults in the Reliquary of Kings before leaving, since they hold the Treaty of Understanding and enough Dwarven Heirloom items for the whole group.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Overview
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes is the resting place of the legendary dwarves of the Eastern Kingdoms, and the hostile Dark Iron dwarves have now invaded it. The recommended level range is 13 to 18. Every boss drop requires level 13, so a group at level 13 or 14 can equip every drop. The quest givers will offer their quests a few levels earlier. Here are the main WoW Forever Hall of Thanes quick facts:
| Parameter | Hall of Thanes |
|---|---|
| Level Range | 13–18 |
| Location | Old Ironforge, under the High Seat of Ironforge |
| Group Size | 5 players |
| Bosses | 4 |
| Quests | 5 for Alliance (plus 1 prerequisite), 2 for Horde |
| Boss Loot | 12 Rare items, Bind on Pickup, item level 18 |
The dungeon lies below the High Seat of Ironforge, in Old Ironforge, which was closed to players for the whole history of Classic Azeroth. For Alliance characters, WoW Forever HoT is one of the first group dungeons after the starting zones.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Location
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes location is Old Ironforge, the lower level of Ironforge under the throne room. To reach the entrance, follow these steps:
- Enter the Ironforge and go to the Great Forge in the central area;
- Walk into the High Seat, where King Magni Bronzebeard stands;
- Take the open door to the tunnel immediately to your left;
- The path goes all the way down through Old Ironforge. At the end of the tunnel, go upstairs to your left, and then go down to the right. The dungeon portal is at the very bottom.
Alliance players have the easiest trip, as Dwarves and Gnomes start right next to the city in Dun Morogh. Other Alliance races can take the Deeprun Tram from Stormwind City. Horde players can also enter, but there is no fast route for them. Their trip starts in Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad Foothills and continues through Arathi Highlands, Wetlands, and Loch Modan before you reach Dun Morogh.
✏️ Every guard in Ironforge will attack a Horde character on sight. It is advisable to unequip your gear before the run through the city, because each death takes durability from the items you are wearing.
For Horde characters, Ragefire Chasm in Orgrimmar, a level 15–25 dungeon, can be done without a trip through enemy territory. If you’d rather not search for a group there, our WoW Forever Ragefire Chasm Boost clears the chasm with every available quest inside done.

WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Map
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes map follows a linear route, so the bosses are always met in the same order. The first rooms belong to the restless spirits of the dwarves, while the Dark Iron forces hold the second half. Trash becomes harder in this second half of the dungeon. Here’s the route through the dungeon:
- Anvilmar’s Rest: Faldrim Anvilmar patrols the center of this room among Enraged Apparition packs, and the Ghostly Attendant who gives An Ancient Grudge also stands here.
- Magmatus: the second boss stands together with a Dark Iron Summoner, so this pull always has two targets.
- Plunder: this boss patrols the hallway in front of the last room, and your tank can drag him back into the previous room.
- Reliquary of Kings: Durgen Dirgehammer guards the final room with two Lesser Stone Golem adds, while the vaults along its walls hold Dwarven Heirloom items and the Treaty of Understanding.
A lever in the Reliquary of Kings opens the way out of the dungeon. The quest tablet is easy to miss here, so it is worth opening every vault before anyone pulls the lever.
In case your group wipes and nobody can cast a resurrection, the Spirit Healer is right outside the city in Dun Morogh. The corpse run back to the portal is short. Also, keep in mind that Paladins have to complete a class quest before they can resurrect anyone. If your Paladin healer still lacks it, our WoW Forever Class Quests service unlocks the spells no trainer sells and covers every travel leg.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Quests
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes quests give an Alliance character 13,300 XP, which is roughly one full level at level 13. Horde characters can take only two of them, worth 5,250 XP together, because the other three quests are Alliance-only. Also, Thom Filch and Afadra Dunwall stand in Old Ironforge, so you can collect those two quests right before entering the portal. Here’s the full list of Hall of Thanes quests:
| Quest | Faction | Quest Giver | Objective | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| An Ancient Grudge | Both | Ghostly Attendant, inside the dungeon | Kill Faldrim Anvilmar | 2,300 XP; Catacomb Cloak or Deepgrave Trousers |
| Important Heirlooms | Both | Thom Filch, Old Ironforge | Collect 8 Dwarven Heirloom | 2,950 XP, 7 silver; Dwarven Tome or Tomb Robber’s Gloves |
| The Restless Dead | Alliance | Afadra Dunwall, Old Ironforge | Kill 15 Enraged Apparition and 10 Tormented Soul | 2,300 XP, 7 silver; Dusty Belt or Cryptwalker Bracers |
| Underground Map | Alliance | Starts from Dark Iron Map | Bring the map to Earthseer Farsen | Unlocks Old Ironforge Incursion |
| Old Ironforge Incursion | Alliance | Earthseer Farsen, Dun Morogh | Bring Durgen Dirgehammer’s Head to King Magni Bronzebeard | 3,200 XP, 8 silver; Calibrated Blunderbuss, Ironforge Greathammer, or Deepblaze |
| The Treaty of Understanding | Alliance | Treaty of Understanding, a vault in the Reliquary of Kings | Bring the tablet to King Magni Bronzebeard | 2,550 XP, 16 silver |
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Quests for Both Factions
There are two WoW Forever Hall of Thanes quests for both factions: An Ancient Grudge and Important Heirlooms, and a single run is enough to finish both of them:
- An Ancient Grudge: the Ghostly Attendant in Anvilmar’s Rest gives this quest inside the dungeon, so nobody has to pick it up in advance. After you kill Faldrim Anvilmar, return to the Attendant and choose between Catacomb Cloak and Deepgrave Trousers.
- Important Heirlooms: Thom Filch at 32.6, 44.6 in Old Ironforge asks for 8 Dwarven Heirloom items. The first ones appear after Faldrim Anvilmar, and the vaults in the Reliquary of Kings hold enough of them for all five players.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Alliance Quests
Alliance quests in WoW Forever Hall of Thanes include three more objectives and one prerequisite quest, and two of them end at King Magni Bronzebeard in the High Seat:
- The Restless Dead: Afadra Dunwall at 34.0, 48.8 in Ironforge wants 15 Enraged Apparition and 10 Tormented Soul kills, and then you have to put the spirit of Anvilmar to rest. These mobs fill the first three rooms, so one clear covers the whole objective.
- Old Ironforge Incursion: this quest gives the most XP of the five, but it requires a short chain in Dun Morogh. First, loot a Dark Iron Map from a Dark Iron Spy or Captain Beld at Ironband’s Compound, which starts Underground Map. Hand it in to Earthseer Farsen at 64.8, 58.4 in Gol’Golar Quarry, and he will send you after Durgen Dirgehammer’s Head.
- The Treaty of Understanding: the quest starts from the Treaty of Understanding tablet in one of the vaults of the Reliquary of Kings. This quest cannot be shared with other players. Thus, every Alliance player in the group has to loot their own copy before leaving.
Gathering every quest before the run takes a lot of travel between Ironforge and Dun Morogh. By the way, our WoW Forever Hourly Driving lets a pro player complete quests, run dungeons, or farm on your character for as many hours as you need.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Trash Mobs
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes trash is easy in the undead rooms and becomes dangerous once you reach the Dark Iron side of the dungeon. The Enraged Apparition and Tormented Soul packs at the start are mostly quest targets, while the four mobs below need more attention:
- Dark Iron Looter: it hits very fast with its daggers, and two or three Looters at once can drain the tank’s Health in a few seconds. For this reason, it is safer to kill them first in most packs.
- Dark Iron Engineer: it throws bombs at a chosen spot on the ground. The target area is set at the start of the throw, so stepping aside avoids all of this damage.
- Dark Iron Summoner: this caster uses Fireball and Summon Fiery Assistant. Break line of sight behind a pillar or a wall, and the Summoner will have to run into melee range of your group.
- Lesser Stone Golem: golems deal heavy damage and hit fast, so it is better to pull them one at a time and focus a single target.
The last trash pack before Durgen combines a Dark Iron Summoner, a Dark Iron Looter, and a Lesser Stone Golem. Use crowd control like Polymorph on one of them, so that only two mobs are active at the start, then kill the Golem first and the Looter second. Stuns such as Hammer of Justice make this pull much safer for the tank.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Bosses
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes bosses are four short fights with one or two abilities each, and the main danger comes from the adds and patrols around them. All four bosses are elite, and none of them needs special gear or resistances at level 13–18:
Faldrim Anvilmar
Faldrim Anvilmar is the first boss of Hall of Thanes, an undead dwarf who patrols the center of Anvilmar’s Rest. His abilities are simple:
- Mind Blast: a 1.5-sec cast that deals Shadow damage and generates high threat. It can be interrupted, so keep an interrupt ready.
- Anvilmar’s Curse: a 10-min curse on the tank that lowers attack and casting speed by 20%, although it also makes the target immune to Poison and Bleed effects.
The fight itself has no mechanics beyond the two abilities above, and the main risk is a pull with extra mobs. Clear the Enraged Apparition packs on one side of the room, wait until Faldrim Anvilmar patrols to your side, and pull him alone. Remember to talk to the Ghostly Attendant after the kill, since this is where you hand in An Ancient Grudge.
Magmatus
Magmatus is an Elemental boss that fights together with a Dark Iron Summoner, so the group has to split its attention between two targets from the start of the pull. These are his abilities:
- Combust: a 3-sec cast on a random player that deals 69 Fire damage and then burns the target every 2 sec for 12 sec.
- Fire burst: Magmatus also releases fire around himself from time to time, which hits every player standing close to him.
On the pull, the tank drags Magmatus away from the rest of the party, while the DPS kill the Summoner first. After the add is down, the whole group switches to the boss. The healer should keep enough Mana for each Combust target. Damage over time from Combust can land on a cloth or leather wearer just as easily as on the tank.
Plunder
Plunder is the third boss of Hall of Thanes, an Elemental who patrols the hallway in front of the last room. He has only one ability, Knock Away, which throws his current target back about 10 yards.
The knockback can push the tank into a trash pack that nobody has pulled yet. To avoid this, the tank should pull Plunder back into the previous, cleared room and fight with their back to a wall or a corner. The rest of the group can then kill him without moving.
Durgen Dirgehammer
Durgen Dirgehammer is the final boss of WoW Forever Hall of Thanes, and he waits in the Reliquary of Kings with two Lesser Stone Golem adds. A few Dark Iron Looter mobs also stand along the edges of the room. The final boss uses two abilities:
- Fear: an AoE fear that can disable players around him for up to 8 sec.
- Rend: a bleed on the tank that deals damage every 3 sec for 15 sec.
Clear the Looters around the room before you start, because an AoE fear in the middle of a big pull can easily scatter the group into other packs. When the fight begins, kill the golems one by one, so that the tank takes damage from a single add at a time. Stuns on the second golem will reduce the damage on the tank. Durgen Dirgehammer goes last, and Alliance players should loot Durgen Dirgehammer’s Head for Old Ironforge Incursion after the kill.
Need the whole dungeon cleared? Our WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Boost lets you skip the group search at level 13. Verified pros clear all four bosses with every available quest inside completed.
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Loot
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes loot includes twelve Rare items, three per boss, and each of them is Bind on Pickup, item level 18, and requires level 13. The list has cloth, leather, and mail armor, as well as a caster dagger, a caster staff, and a Strength axe. However, no set items or Bind on Equip drops have been found in the dungeon so far.
Since every drop is Bind on Pickup, the only way to get it is to run the dungeon. Want to gear up through all the early instances at once? Our WoW Forever World Tour clears the whole set of dungeons for your level range one after another.

Best WoW Forever Hall of Thanes Quest Rewards
The best WoW Forever Hall of Thanes quest rewards come from Old Ironforge Incursion, which offers a choice of three weapons for different classes. Here’s a comparison of the most useful quest items:
| Item | Type | Quest | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ironforge Greathammer | Two-Hand Mace | Old Ironforge Incursion | Item level 18, deals 42 Fire damage on hit |
| Deepblaze | Wand | Old Ironforge Incursion | Item level 18, Fire damage |
| Dwarven Tome | Off-Hand | Important Heirlooms | +1 Spirit, +3 Spell Power |
| Catacomb Cloak | Back | An Ancient Grudge | +2 Stamina, +3 Attack Power, more Attack Power against Humanoids |
Ironforge Greathammer is a strong choice for Warriors and Paladins with two-handed weapons, while casters will get more out of Deepblaze. Also, Horde characters cannot take Old Ironforge Incursion, so their most useful quest rewards from this dungeon are Dwarven Tome and Catacomb Cloak.
Best Group Setup for WoW Forever Hall of Thanes
The best group setup for WoW Forever Hall of Thanes is the classic one tank, one healer, and three DPS. A few extra tools make the run smoother, so it is very helpful to bring the following:
- Interrupt: a Rogue, Warrior, or Shaman can stop Mind Blast from Faldrim Anvilmar, which reduces both the damage and the threat on other players.
- Crowd control: Polymorph from a Mage or Hammer of Justice from a Paladin keeps the extra golem or Looter out of the fight in the final packs.
- Healer with spare Mana: Combust on random players lasts 12 sec and Rend on the tank lasts 15 sec, so the healer needs spare Mana for both.
- Ranged DPS: Hunters, Mages, and Warlocks can pull Summoners around corners and keep attacking while the melee players handle the Looters.
A tank with good threat on several targets will make the Dark Iron packs in WoW Forever HoT easier, since Looters and golems hit hard. You can compare the options in our WoW Forever Best Tanks ranking.
After WoW Forever HoT, the next new dungeon on the leveling route is Ruins of Lordaeron for levels 15–20. Our WoW Forever Ruins of Lordaeron Boost covers this dungeon as well. Verified pros will clear the ruins in about 45 minutes.
