Samples are a resource, that can be used to upgrade your Ship Modules thus increase your in-game performance. There are 3 kinds of Samples:

Green Samples are pretty common, but are required in large numbers;
Orange Samples are rarer, but really important for mid-tier upgrades;
Purple Samples are the most valuable, as you can only find around 3-6 samples per mission, but they are needed for every high-tier upgrade.

All kinds of Samples can be found lying in points of interest depending on Mission Difficulty, e.g. Purple Samples are only available in Difficulty 7 and higher.
