4.9What Are Voyages in Path of Exile?
Path of Exile Voyages are larger underwater expeditions built from completed Lost Charts. A standard Voyage connects nine Charts on one board and turns them into a single run. Each Chart adds a revealed modifier, so its placement changes both the rewards and difficulty.
This provides a straightforward PoE Voyages progression loop where there is enough space for greedy setups. You complete Lost Charts, discover the modifiers, assemble your board, and then go back to these locations for one voyage. You will be able to boost your favorite tiles multiple times, but all threats will follow you underwater. Don’t forget to Level Up to be able to start your underwater expeditions.

How to Unlock Path of Exile Voyage
PoE Voyages become available when you explore at least nine different Charts through your league progression. Talk to Valerie on board The Sovereign after you complete the requirements. She will provide you with the Voyage planning interface and explain the details of the Maiden Voyage.
The Maiden Voyage involves four Charts using a smaller 2×2 Voyage board. Here you will learn how to use connections, modifier placement, and basic travelling. In future Voyages, you will have to scout nine different Charts using the standard 3×3 Voyage board.
Remember that you should not confuse the unlocking condition with the board size used in the tutorial. You have to scout nine Charts before starting the four-Charts Maiden Voyage. How to Complete Path of Exile Voyage
A completed Voyage follows the board layout you prepared. Thus, to complete PoE Voyage, you should follow these steps:
- Speak with Valerie and enter through the Bathysphere.
- Follow the connected route between the selected areas.
- Send valuable drops to the surface with Allflame Capsules.
- Return to the extraction point before the Lantern route collapses.
Basically, all the monsters, encounters, and rewards follow the Voyage Board layout that you’ve prepared before starting a voyage. Clear valuable areas first, but keep a safe route back to the Bathysphere. A warning appears when only one Lantern remains. Placing the final Lantern starts the collapse, so finish distant reward areas before using it.

How to Use Path of Exile Voyage Board
The PoE Voyage Board creates one expedition from nine returned charts. Every tile contains information about its route lines, hidden elements, area properties, and effects from surrounding areas. Corruption Currents can be seen at the border of the board before placing any tiles.
To start using the Voyage Board in PoE, create your route, then increase its profitability. Keep in mind that the perfectly rewarded cluster is not important if the starting area is unable to get to other tiles. How to Connect Nine Charts
Connecting Path of Exile Nine Charts on a board requires some careful planning. The dark lines on each Chart show travel paths. Rotate and arrange all nine Charts until the starting tile connects with every area you plan to visit.
Keep several completed Charts with different patterns, since exactly nine pieces may not form a usable route. You can test your layout with the community PoE Voyage Planner before starting the run.
How Corruption Currents Work
Border modifiers known as Path of Exile Corruption Currents are randomly generated and placed at the borders of the Voyage Board, affecting board positions close to them and changing from one voyage to another. The same set of Charts can create an entirely different plan every time.
Some Currents provide you with direct bonuses, whereas other Currents buff monsters and alter the encounter results. A strong border effect becomes a key element in your entire build. Make sure to read all Currents before placing the first Chart.
📌 It is important to note that a good Current will not make all adjacent Charts equally good. It is necessary to match the conditions with the right number of monsters, encounters, or rewards.
How to Place Charts on the Voyage Board
Correctly ordered placement of PoE Voyage Charts will save you from most board errors. Place the target Chart near the best Current or your reward area first; don’t try to use any empty spots.
- Examine all Corruption Currents on the board.
- Pick one reward area or encounter.
- Place the target Chart near the corresponding Current.
- Place adjacent modifier tiles for the target Chart.
- Re-position all Voyage-wide effects.
- Finish all routes and check their connection.
- Check the monster difficulty for the Voyage.
Take one last pass after the board looks finished. Hover over each effect and confirm its highlighted targets. This small check catches diagonal mistakes, unused implicits, and isolated route sections.
4.9PoE Voyage Modifiers
When planning a Voyage, you will work with three closely connected Path of Exile Voyage Modifier Mechanics:
- Chart Implicit Modifiers;
- Adjacent-Area Effects;
- Voyage-Wide Effects.
Once charted, each completed Chart reveals a hidden implicit for future Voyages. It may change adjacent areas, add encounters, alter rewards, or affect the entire expedition. Good PoE Voyage planning starts with separating adjacent effects from Voyage-wide ones.
Chart Implicit Modifiers
Path of Exile Chart Implicits become visible once you have completed their individual underwater areas. Modifiers will still be present once you attach the Charts to the Voyage Board. Sometimes, an appealing Chart seems like an ordinary one until its effect is combined with that of other tiles.
The implicit effects in PoE can be additional Strongboxes, rare monsters, friendly jellyfish, Tormented Spirits, and empowerment of Wildwood Wisps. Some modifiers replace a percentage of equipment dropped by monsters with Gold. It doesn’t mean you need to focus on it to earn Gold, though; you can simply reach out to our team.
Adjacents
Path of Exile Adjacent modifiers affect only the direct neighbouring tiles shown by the Voyage Board. These effects reward central or edge placements that touch the intended reward area. Their value drops sharply when they point toward weak or empty positions.
A Chart counts as PoE Adjacent when it sits directly above, below, left, or right. Diagonal tiles do not share adjacency effects. A central Chart can therefore reach four areas, while a corner Chart reaches only two.
Voyage-Wide Effects
Voyage-Wide Effects in Path of Exile do not require a premium slot in the center. You should put them after assembling an adjacency cluster. It will give you flexibility in placing effects requiring two, three, or four targets.
The most appealing strategy is to place all your best modifiers on one tile. However, make sure that you know the monster bonuses that will be granted by them before finalizing your setup.

The best PoE Voyage modifiers vary according to the Current setup and the area where you want rewards from. Direct benefits for the reward area should take precedence over difficulty that does not affect the reward area.

Path of Exile Best Voyage Board Strategy
The ideal PoE Voyage Board configuration begins with a single reward goal. The focused strategy is generally better than various bonuses that are spread out and remain easy to understand throughout the playthrough.
- Select your primary reward area. Set the tile with the highest possible reward or special event, or the tile that benefits from the Corruption Current the most. Rare places like the anchor fields and Kalguuran shipments are more preferable than the standard loot tiles.
- Select appropriate adjacency modifiers. Determine whether the tile requires more monsters, Strongboxes, events, or quantity. Position the supporting Charts around that area without mixing up bonuses for unrelated content. Central tiles affect four areas, bordering tiles affect three areas, and corner tiles affect two areas.
- Start building around Corruption Currents. Border modifiers will be rolled each time you go on a new Voyage, so it is better to have a look at them first. Then, nearby Chart bonuses add some more rare monsters and Giant Starfish to make the event happen more frequently.
- Take into consideration the last difficulty. Monster damage, rare bonuses, recovery penalties, and encounter modifiers should all be considered at once. High clear speed will be crucial in crowded areas, whereas bonuses from rares requires high single-target damage.
Global quantity and rarity buffs may be used for filling empty spots because they do not need any adjacency. Try not to squeeze all the possible rewards into one board. A slightly easier Voyage will be much more profitable since the player will be able to complete it safely.
How to Escape Path of Exile Voyage
One way to escape the PoE Voyage is to return to the extraction point and call for the Bathysphere once the rewards remaining aren’t worth the risk any longer. Take care of the enemies around you first before proceeding to the last stage of waiting.
The first Lantern collapse is now happening at a slower pace, and Drowning has been downgraded to a lesser speed reduction.

The right board generates connections that the Lost Charts alone can never achieve. There could be greater connections, better containment, and transformed drops. The Diviner, Arcanist, and Operative Strongboxes could all now generate by default at areas above level 67. You no longer require the initial pieces of Vespers to make them upgrade.
Dead Man’s Sulphur and Ducats
Voyages in Path of Exile provide Dead Man’s Sulphur and some Ducats for the league crafting. The Sulphur is used for Vesper’s ghostly crafting, while Ducats will provide some additional, unique effects that cannot be acquired through regular currency crafting.
Ducat crafting was moved earlier in the progression process through Patch 3.29.0b and requires only three upgrades, not five.
