Completing all acts in Diablo 4 unlocks various endgame activities and harder World Tier difficulties, including Helltide Events, where players can battle against Hell’s forces to earn specific rewards as Aberrant Cinders and Forgotten Souls.

The Diablo 4 Helltide is a world event that provides powerful items for all builds, making it accessible to most characters. Recently Blizzard has made some changes to the XP gains from opening Helltide chests, which has made it a strong contender as the best source of XP in the game. This guide will explain the Helltide Event, its mechanics, and the rewards it offers, including sources of Aberrant Cinders, Forgotten Souls, costs of chests, and Mystery chest locations.
What Is The Helltide?
The Helltide is a unique world event in Sanctuary. It occurs every hour for one hour, altering a region into a hellish landscape. When the Helltide Event is active the entire zone is colored blood-red. During this event, in affected zones spawn Demonic enemies, meteors as hazardous natural phenomena, and all monsters are two levels higher than your character’s level.
The location is random and can occur in any of the five regions except capitals and hubs, PvP zones, and the Tree of Whispers. You can use Helltide tracker and Mystery Chest Locator tool to get notifications of the upcoming events.
How to Unlock Helltides
First of all, to unlock Diablo 4 Helltide Events, players must access World Tier 3. You can do this by completing the campaign and World Tier 2’s Capstone dungeon. For a smoother gaming experience, it’s highly recommended that players grind to at least level 50 before entering into the thrilling realm of World Tier 3! Dive into our Diablo 4 Leveling Service to start enjoying the full content as soon as possible.
After unlocking and entering World Tier 3, players can locate the World Tier Statue in Kyovashad. Speaking with Doomsayer Pira will initiate and conclude The Helltide Rises quest, enabling the event to appear in the player’s world.
How to Complete Helltide Events in Diablo 4
To complete Helltide Events you just need to kill stronger versions of regular demons, bosses and the Diablo 4 Butcher. However, there is no specific objective to beat a Helltide, it is mainly an opportunity for farming. So the main goal is to get as much loot as you can, gaining special currency. Namely, defeating monsters in Helltide gives Aberrant Cinders. It’s a unique currency only available during the event. Using Aberrant Cinders you can open Tortured Chests in the Helltide region, guaranteeing specific types of items, like, for example, a Tortured Amulet chest will always drop an amulet. Aberrant Cinders expire when Helltide ends, so spend them before it’s over.
Also, during a Helltide, defeating enemies and opening chests has a high chance of dropping Forgotten Souls. Forgotten Souls are an endgame currency used to improve Sacred and Ancestral items. To fully upgrade your character’s items, you will need dozens of Forgotten Souls. So, it is important to farm the Helltide whenever it appears. Collecting these two types of currency is your way to the coveted reward. If you’re not ready to spend hours on farming, you can buy any type of Diablo 4 Items on Overgear!
Diablo 4 Helltide Rewards
The main reward for participating in Helltide Events are special chests – Tortured Gifts. And as we mentioned above, to open Tortured Gifts, you need to collect Aberrant Cinders by killing as many mobs as possible within a Helltide area in 60 minutes. The location of Tortured Gifts is marked on your map. But be careful collecting Aberrant Cinders for the chest. If you die, you’ll lose half of what you’ve gathered.
By opening Tortured Gifts you can get:
- Legendary Items;
- Cosmetic Items;
- Crafting Materials.
Now let’s take a closer look at these chests.
Tortured Gift Rewards
As already noted, Tortured Gifts are item specific and there are several variations. Each type require a different number of Aberrant Cinders to open them.
Tortured Gift Name | Gear Type | Aberrant Cinder Cost |
Tortured Gift of Protection | Helms, Chest Armor, Gloves, Grieves, Boots | 75 |
Tortured Gift of Jewelry | Rings and Amulets | 125 |
Tortured Gift of Light Weaponry | Daggers, Wands, Swords, and other one-handed weapons | 125 |
Tortured Gift of Heavy Weaponry | Two-Handed Swords, Staves, and other two-handed weapons | 150 |
Tortured Gift of Mystery | Multiple Unique and Legendary items for various equipment slots | 175 |
However, despite the difference in their types, all Tortured Gifts contain Fiend Rose and Forgotten Souls. These are crafting materials required to improve your Sacred and Ancestral gear, which you can find only within Helltide-affected regions. Fiend Rose and Forgotten Souls are extremely rare, so don’t miss you chance.
Note, that there are two other ways to farm Forgotten Souls apart from opening Tortured Gifts as well:
- Collect Screaming Hell Veins in Helltide zones;
- Kill the Helltide Boss.
Diablo 4 Helltide Mystery Chest Locations
The most desirable chest is the Tortured Gift of Mystery. It demands 175 Aberrant Cinders to unlock, which is a substantial amount. Unlike other chests, it is not marked on your map, making it extremely difficult to locate. However, the rewards it provides surpass those of all other chests. The most delightful things you can get from these chests are Unique and Legendary items.
To find the Mystery Chest and get good rewards, we give you this Helltide Mystery Chest locations map to make it easier. It shows the locations of all Helltide Mystery Chest. However, these locations may not be exact, as they can change slightly between events. But if you explore around the marked area, you will definitely find what you need or you can use the Mystery Chest Locator tool mentioned above.
Your main goal is to safely reach the Mystery Chests on the map. Either have reliable friends with you or be quick to ensure survival. But even with a group of friends Helltides are challenging and require strategy to succeed.
Diablo 4 Helltide Bosses & Special Events
In addition to farming Aberrant Cinders, players will also encounter powerful Helltide Bosses and participate in special events exclusive to Helltide areas.
- Kixxarth, Helltide Assassin
The Helltide Assasin has high movement speed and tankiness. This boss constantly moves around the map and is marked with a horned skull icon on the minimap. Defeating it solo is not recommended because of its high HP and ability to one-shot you if your gear is not good enough. Don’t forget that dying means losing half of your Aberrant Cinders.
Kixxarth is always a higher level than you and he is at least level 72, so if you’re only level 50, your damage won’t be that effective. Which is why it’s important to communicate with your team, stick together, and try to stay alive as long as possible. The elixirs will be very helpful in this battle cause they will increase your Dodge Chance, Armor, and Maximum Life rates.
- Portal Invasion Event & Helltide Commanders
To make Invasion Portals spawn, you need to defeating a group of Occultists performing a ritual. Invasion Portals will release numerous demons who will attempt to kill you and deprive you of half of the cinders.
When the mobs are eliminated, the Helltide Commander is summoned. This boss presents a lesser threat compared to Kixxarth, but you will still have to confront several Elites and a group of demons during the battle. Additionally, you will encounter Helltide Meteors descending in various areas, further increasing the challenge of evading the boss’s attacks and surviving.
- Local Events
While exploring Helltide areas, you will come across Local and Zone events. These events are marked by an orange circle and should be completed. They are important because they reward you with additional Aberrant Cinders and other loot. Additionally, they are generally easier to complete compared to defeating a boss.

Here is a list of Diablo 4 Helltide tips and tricks that may be helpful to you.
