HOME How to get OSRS How to Get to Motherlode Mine Osrs

The Motherlode Mine is OSRS’s most popular mid-level Mining training method — an AFK-friendly activity where you mine pay-dirt, wash it through sluice pipes, and collect a random assortment of ores. It’s also the only source of Golden Nuggets, the currency for the Coal Bag, Gem Bag, and Prospector Kit. Getting there is simple once you know the route.

  • Located in the Dwarven Mines beneath Falador, accessible via a ladder near the Mining Guild
  • Requires 30 Mining to enter the lower level; 72 Mining for the upper level
  • Fastest travel: Skills Necklace to Dwarven Mine or Falador lodestone then run south
  • Golden Nuggets are the reward currency — earned at roughly 2.8 nuggets per 100 pay-dirt
  • Upper level (72+ Mining) gives significantly faster XP and more pay-dirt per hour

How to Get to the Motherlode Mine in OSRS

The Motherlode Mine sits inside the Dwarven Mines, which are accessed through a ladder in the building south of Falador’s south gate, or from the Mining Guild entrance directly. It does not require any quests.

Travel options:

  1. Skills Necklace — teleports directly to the Mining Guild, which is adjacent to the Dwarven Mine entrance. Walk north-west inside and descend to the Motherlode Mine area.
  2. Falador Lodestone / Falador Teleport — run south out of Falador to the mine entrance building.
  3. Dwarven Mine entrance south of Falador — walk in and find the Motherlode Mine in the south-western section.
  4. Draynor Village Fairy Ring (ALS) — run west to Falador and south to the mine.

ℹ️ The Motherlode Mine is split into two levels. The lower level is available from 30 Mining. The upper level requires 72 Mining and is significantly more efficient — if you’re 72+, always train upstairs.

What to Do at the Motherlode Mine

The Mining loop at Motherlode is simple and forgiving:

  1. Mine pay-dirt from the ore veins along the walls
  2. Deposit pay-dirt into the hopper at the centre of the mine
  3. Wait for the sluice pipe to process the dirt
  4. Collect your ore from the sack at the bottom of the pipe

Each pay-dirt yields a random ore based on your Mining level. Higher Mining levels mean better ores — at 85+ you’ll see consistent Runite Ore drops from the sack. Golden Nuggets are added to your total alongside ore at a rate of roughly 1 nugget per 28 pay-dirt processed.

Mining LevelCommon Ores from Sack
30–54Coal, Gold, Iron
55–74Mithril, Adamantite, Coal
75–84Adamantite, Runite (rare)
85+Runite, Adamantite, consistent

At 72 Mining, switch to the upper level immediately. The vein density is higher and there are more rocks per section, meaning less time walking and more time mining. The XP/hour difference is roughly 20–30% compared to the lower level.

Golden Nugget Rewards

Golden Nuggets are spent at Prospector Percy’s shop inside the Motherlode Mine. These are the items worth prioritising:

ItemCost (Nuggets)Notes
Coal Bag100Stores 27 extra coal — essential for Blast Furnace
Gem Bag100Stores 60 gems — useful for skilling
Prospector Kit (full set)180+2.5% Mining XP bonus
Soft Clay Pack10Cheap filler; not a priority

Most players buy the Prospector Kit first for the XP bonus, then Coal Bag if they plan to do Blast Furnace. If you want to fast-track your Mining level to unlock the upper level or reach 99, our OSRS skilling services can cover the grind efficiently.

OSRS Motherlode Mine FAQ

Below are the most common questions about travelling to and training at the Motherlode Mine in OSRS.

How Do You Unlock the Upper Level of Motherlode Mine?

You need 72 Mining to access the upper level. Pay Prospector Percy 100 Golden Nuggets to unlock the upper floor permanently — this is a one-time fee. After paying, use the ladder in the north-east corner of the lower level to climb up.

Is Motherlode Mine Good XP?

Motherlode Mine gives roughly 15,000–25,000 Mining XP/hour on the lower level and 25,000–35,000 XP/hour on the upper level. It’s not the fastest Mining XP method — Granite or Sandstone beats it — but it’s highly AFK-friendly and pays for itself in ore value and Golden Nuggets.

How Many Nuggets per Hour at Motherlode Mine?

At the upper level with consistent play, expect roughly 15–25 Golden Nuggets per hour depending on Mining level and click intensity. Getting the full Prospector Kit (180 nuggets) takes approximately 8–12 hours. The Coal Bag (100 nuggets) takes 5–7 hours.

What Is the Best Pickaxe for Motherlode Mine?

The best pickaxe is whichever your Attack level and Mining level support. Dragon Pickaxe is accessible from 61 Attack and gives a faster mining speed than Rune. Crystal Pickaxe and Infernal Pickaxe are upgrades at endgame. Use the best you can wield — it directly affects pay-dirt per hour.

Can You AFK at Motherlode Mine?

Yes — Motherlode Mine is one of OSRS’s most AFK-friendly training methods. Mining a vein, walking to deposit, and collecting from the sack requires periodic clicks but no continuous attention. Most players interact every 30–60 seconds during a session.

Motherlode Mine is the kind of place you settle into for a long session with something else on in the background — steady progress, steady nuggets, and no pressure to play optimally.
