WoW Forever Leatherworking Overview

WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide

WoW Forever Leatherworking crafts gear for Leather and Mail wearers, along with armor kits, ammo pouches, and camp objects that any class can use. Leatherworking in WoW Forever has 511 recipes in total. Many of the new ones are role sets, so they keep your gear up to date between dungeon drops.

What Changed for Leatherworking in WoW Forever

Leatherworking changes in WoW Forever start with the new armor sets, which give every Leather and Mail role its own crafted gear from skill 60. Many Classic recipes also turn yellow or gray earlier than before, so an old Classic leveling route can leave you crafting items that no longer give skill points. The main changes are listed below:

  • New role sets: Brawler’s, Defender’s, Trapper’s, Wisdom’s, Stormrider’s, and Totemic sets start with belts at 60 skill and continue with gloves (75), boots (85), hoods (100), tunics (110), and leggings (125), and the leggings are crafted next to a Tanning Rack. Helms such as Brawler’s Leather Helm and Wisdom’s Leather Helm open at 125 skill.
  • Later armor families: Mender’s, Prowler’s, Skulker’s, Skirmisher’s, Skycaller’s, Stalker’s, and Warden’s recipes appear from around 150 skill, and several of them are Mail pieces for Hunters and Shamans.
  • New armor kits: Forceful Armor Kits add Attack Power, while Mystic Armor Kits add Spell Power. Each type has four ranks at 80, 135, 185, and 235 skill, and the top ranks use reagents from Alchemy and Enchanting, as the Forceful Rugged Armor Kit needs Dream Dust and Elixirs of Greater Strength.
  • Scarce materials: Pristine Leather, Pristine Hide, and Pristine Scale are new reagents for many of the new sets, so it is worth keeping them rather than selling them to a vendor. Pristine Leather drops from low-level Beasts and can also be bought on the Black Market Auction House.
  • Merchant’s Favor recipes: 82 recipes are bought from trade camp vendors. At 300 Leatherworking, you can purchase Leatherworking Certification for 1,000 Merchant’s Favor, which unlocks the account-wide “the Leatherworker” title.

WoW Forever Best Classes for Leatherworking

The best classes for Leatherworking in WoW Forever are Rogue, Druid, Hunter, and Shaman, because they can wear the Leather and Mail armor they craft. Each of them has new role sets that fit their specs, so the profession gives them gear for the way they play:

  • Rogue: the Brawler’s and Skulker’s patterns give Rogues crafted Leather pieces with physical damage stats, and Leather is the armor type they wear for the whole game.
  • Druid: Druids can use seven of the new role sets. Brawler’s and Prowler’s fit physical builds, Defender’s and Warden’s fit tanking, and Wisdom’s, Mender’s, and Stormrider’s fit healing and spell damage.
  • Hunter: Trapper’s Leather is the starting set, and the Stalker’s Mail pieces replace it after the class learns Mail at level 40. Quivers and ammo pouches crafted by Leatherworkers are also used by Hunters.
  • Shaman: Totemic gear gives hybrid stats, while Skycaller’s and Skirmisher’s pieces fit caster and physical builds, and the class also switches to Mail at level 40.

Some of the new crafted armor is Bind on Pickup, so you’ll need the profession on the character who is going to wear that gear, since those items cannot be bought from another player. Also, other classes benefit from armor kits and ammo pouches, which can be used by anyone.

WoW Forever Leatherworking Camp Objects

Leatherworking camp objects in WoW Forever are placed next to a Campfire, and all camping features share a cooldown of one hour. The Camp Tent gives Rested experience to players sitting nearby, while the other two objects are crafting stations that also keep the bonus of the tent. Here are all three WoW Forever Leatherworking camp objects:

Camp ObjectSkillRecipe SourceEffect
Camp Tent20Leatherworking trainerPlayers sitting nearby gain Rested experience up to 5% of a level
Tanning Rack140Blueprint: Tanning Rack, drop from Razorclaw the Butcher in Shadowfang KeepCamp Tent effect, allows crafting certain reagents
Sewing Machine300Blueprint: Sewing Machine, source TBACamp Tent effect, required for advanced recipes

The Camp Tent needs only five Light Leather, so you can place it from the very first zones. A Tanning Rack costs five Medium Leather, three Fine Thread, and two Simple Wood, although its blueprint has a low drop rate. The Sewing Machine needs an Undeath Engine, five Rugged Leather, and one Rune Thread. In the game data, 48 Leatherworking recipes have to be crafted next to a Tanning Rack, including Cured Rugged Hide, and 91 recipes at 300 skill need a Sewing Machine. Placing a rack uses up the item, and it stays at the camp for 15 minutes, so put the reagents for the whole batch in your bags before you set it up.

How to Learn Leatherworking in WoW Forever

WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide

You can learn Leatherworking in WoW Forever from a trainer in any capital city, and the Apprentice rank is also taught in several starting villages and on Zephras Isle. The first rank has no level requirement, so a fresh character can start right away. Expert and Artisan, however, are taught by only one trainer per faction, so these two trips are worth planning.

WoW Forever Leatherworking Ranks

WoW Forever Leatherworking ranks raise your maximum skill by 75 points each, and every rank after Apprentice needs both skill and character level. You can train the next rank before reaching your current cap, so there is no reason to wait until you are stuck at 75 or 150. Here are the ranks and their requirements:

RankMax SkillRequirementTraining Cost
Apprentice75No skill or level requirement10 copper
Journeyman15050 skill, level 105 silver
Expert225125 skill, level 2050 silver
Artisan300200 skill, level 355 gold

WoW Forever Leatherworking Trainers

The WoW Forever Leatherworking trainers below teach each rank, and you will need a different trainer for Journeyman than the one who taught you Apprentice. Apprentice trainers are listed only for the main cities and a few villages:

RankAllianceHordeZephras Isle
ApprenticeRandal Worth (Stormwind City), Gretta Finespindle (Ironforge), Darianna (Darnassus), Adele Fielder (Goldshire)Kamari (Orgrimmar), Dan Golthas (Undercity), Mak (Thunder Bluff), Chaw Stronghide (Bloodhoof Village)Indari Sunseam (Shen’dar Village)
JourneymanSimon Tanner (Stormwind City), Fimble Finespindle (Ironforge), Faldron (Darnassus), Aayndia Floralwind (Astranaar, Ashenvale)Karolek (Orgrimmar), Arthur Moore (Undercity), Tarn (Thunder Bluff), Krulmoo Fullmoon (Camp Taurajo), Brawn (Grom’gol, Stranglethorn Vale)Emerii Tallgust (Valanaar)
ExpertTelonis (Darnassus)Una (Thunder Bluff)None
ArtisanDrakk Stonehand (Aerie Peak, The Hinterlands)Hahrana Ironhide (Camp Mojache, Feralas)None

Artisan trainers are also the only source of some recipes, such as Nightscape Pants, which regular Expert trainers do not teach. Drakk Stonehand is inside Wildhammer Keep, while Hahrana Ironhide stands in the main building across from the inn.

Artisan Leatherworking requires a level 35 character, so a low-level crafter has to gain character levels before training it. If your Leatherworker is still far from that level, our WoW Forever Hourly Driving can get the character there while you focus on skinning and crafting.

WoW Forever Leatherworking Specializations

WoW Forever Leatherworking specializations are Dragonscale Leatherworking, Elemental Leatherworking, and Tribal Leatherworking, and each one unlocks recipes that a normal Leatherworker cannot learn. Specialization quests require a level 40 character and the crafted or looted items listed below, while the first specialization patterns need 235 skill. Completing one quest prevents you from learning the other two, so each character can have only one specialization:

SpecializationFocusAlliance TrainerHorde TrainerQuest Items
Dragonscale LeatherworkingMail armor for Hunters and ShamansPeter Galen (Azshara)Thorkaf Dragoneye (Badlands)2 Tough Scorpid Breastplates, 2 Tough Scorpid Gloves, 10 Worn Dragonscales
Elemental LeatherworkingLeather armor for physical damageSarah Tanner (Searing Gorge)Brumn Winterhoof (Arathi Highlands)2 Heart of Fire, 2 Globe of Water, 2 Core of Earth, 2 Breath of Wind
Tribal LeatherworkingLeather armor for Druids and RoguesCaryssia Moonhunter (Feralas)Se’Jib (Stranglethorn Vale)Wild Leather Vest, Wild Leather Helmet

Specialization recipes are marked on the pattern itself. Pattern: Frostsaber Boots requires Tribal Leatherworking, while Black Dragonscale Breastplate requires Dragonscale Leatherworking, and Molten Helm requires Elemental Leatherworking. The 1-300 route below works without a specialization, although Tribal Leatherworkers can also level with Frostsaber Boots from 250 skill.

Best Professions to Pair with Leatherworking in WoW Forever

WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide

The best profession to pair with Leatherworking in WoW Forever is Skinning, because almost every recipe uses leather, hides, or scales. You will kill many Beasts while questing, and a Skinner turns them into Light Leather and Medium Leather without paying for them on the Auction House. Also, no racial bonus affects Leatherworking in WoW Forever, so any race can take it. Here is how other professions fit WoW Forever Leatherworking:

ProfessionWhy It Fits Leatherworking
SkinningCovers the leather, hides, and Heavy Scorpid Scale for the whole leveling route
EngineeringCrafts the Salt Shaker, which turns Deeprock Salt into Refined Deeprock Salt for Cured Rugged Hide
AlchemyProvides Elixir of Minor Agility, Elixir of Defense, and potions for the Forceful and Mystic armor kits
EnchantingSupplies the dusts used in Forceful and Mystic armor kits

Skinning is the best choice, while Engineering only matters if you want your own salt for Cured Rugged Hide. The Salt Shaker has a cooldown of almost three days, so many Leatherworkers buy Refined Deeprock Salt from an Engineer. In case you would rather skip the gathering part, our WoW Forever Skinning service raises your Skinning to 300, so you can skin every Beast you meet up to level 60.

Making Gold with Leatherworking in WoW Forever

WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide

Making gold with Leatherworking in WoW Forever relies on armor kits, crafted gear, and leather for supply crates. Armor kits are used by every class, as they permanently add Armor, Attack Power, or Spell Power to chest, legs, hands, or feet. The Forceful and Mystic versions also need reagents from other crafters, which keeps their supply lower than that of a simple Rugged Armor Kit.

Waylaid supply crates are a second source of demand, since several of them ask for leather goods. Players who fill these crates need stacks of Light Leather, Medium Leather, Thick Leather, and Rugged Leather, as well as crafted items such as Guardian Gloves and Rugged Armor Kit. Crafted gear is less reliable because players do not replace armor as often as they use consumables. However, Bind on Equip pieces for leveling characters and Mail items for Hunters and Shamans can still sell well.

Before crafting expensive items, compare their price with the value of the materials on your server. Sometimes selling Pristine Leather or Rugged Leather brings more gold than the finished piece. If you need gold for patterns, materials, or training, you can also get WoW Forever Gold from us and spend more time crafting than farming.

More ways to earn gold are covered in our WoW Forever How to Make Gold Guide.

WoW Forever Leatherworking Leveling 1-300

WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide

WoW Forever Leatherworking leveling from 1 to 300 takes around 455 crafts with the route below, and the exact number depends on your luck with skill-ups. A recipe always gives a point while it is orange, often while it is yellow, and rarely once it turns green. The Working Overtime Legacy perk raises the chance of a skill-up by up to 20%, while Dedicated Study adds one point to your lowest profession once every 23 hours.

WoW Forever Leatherworking Materials List

The WoW Forever Leatherworking materials list is split at 225 skill, because the later leather comes from level 45+ zones. Threads, Salt, and dyes are sold by trade supply vendors for a few coins, while leather and hides come from Skinning or other players.

Each leather type can also be made from the previous one. Three Ruined Leather Scraps make Light Leather, and four Light Leather make Medium Leather. Higher up, five Medium Leather make Heavy Leather. Six Heavy Leather make Thick Leather, while six Thick Leather make Rugged Leather. Here are the materials you need for the route below:

These are average amounts, so we advise farming or buying about 10% more. For Light Leather and Medium Leather, the amounts already take into account the pieces you craft yourself on the route. The Thick Hide and Deeprock Salt are used for 13 Cured Thick Hide, which you craft at the trainer before the Thick Leather Ammo Pouch step. In the 225-300 column, the amounts already include 4 Cured Rugged Hide crafts for the Heavy Scorpid Helm step.

If you would rather skip the farming, our WoW Forever Professions Kits deliver the full set of materials for a crafting profession, together with a step-by-step crafting guide for reaching 300.

WoW Forever Leatherworking 1-75

WoW Forever Leatherworking 1-75 uses the recipes you know from the start and one Apprentice trainer recipe, so it costs only leather and thread. Here’s the route for the first 75 points:

SkillRecipeCraftsReagentsRecipe Source
1-36Light Leather~50Ruined Leather Scraps (3)Known
36-45Light Armor Kit~14Light Leather (1)Known
45-49Handstitched Leather Boots~6Light Leather (2), Coarse Thread (1)Known
49-75Embossed Leather Gloves~27Light Leather (3), Coarse Thread (2)Trainer

Ruined Leather Scraps and Light Leather drop from Beasts in the starting zones when you skin them, while Coarse Thread is sold by trade supply vendors. Train Journeyman as soon as you reach 50 skill and level 10, so the gloves keep giving points past 75.

WoW Forever Leatherworking 75-150

WoW Forever Leatherworking 75-150 uses Medium Leather and the first cured hides. Here are the recipes for this range:

SkillRecipeCraftsReagentsRecipe Source
75-85Medium Leather~30Light Leather (4)Trainer
85-106Fine Leather Belt~35Light Leather (6), Coarse Thread (2)Trainer
106-125Nimble Leather Gloves~20Medium Leather (6), Elixir of Minor Agility (1), Fine Thread (1)Trainer
125-145Cured Heavy Hide~60Heavy Hide (1), Salt (3)Trainer
145-150Hillman’s Leather Gloves~6Medium Leather (14), Fine Thread (4)Trainer

Elixir of Minor Agility for Nimble Leather Gloves comes from an Alchemist or the Auction House. Keep every Cured Heavy Hide you make between 125 and 145, since the green items and Guardian Gloves use them as reagents. Expert is taught at 125 skill and level 20 by Telonis in Darnassus for the Alliance and Una in Thunder Bluff for the Horde.

WoW Forever Leatherworking 150-225

WoW Forever Leatherworking 150-225 is still done with trainer recipes, and it uses Heavy Leather first and Thick Leather after 197 skill. Here’s the route for this range:

SkillRecipeCraftsReagentsRecipe Source
150-159Green Leather Belt~10Cured Heavy Hide (1), Heavy Leather (5), Fine Thread (1), Green Dye (1), Iron Buckle (1)Trainer
159-165Green Leather Bracers~6Cured Heavy Hide (2), Heavy Leather (6), Green Dye (1), Fine Thread (1)Trainer
165-197Guardian Gloves~38Heavy Leather (4), Cured Heavy Hide (1), Silken Thread (1)Trainer

213-225Thick Leather Ammo Pouch~13Thick Leather (10), Cured Thick Hide (1), Elixir of Defense (1), Silken Thread (6)Trainer

Iron Buckle for Green Leather Belt is made by Blacksmiths, while Green Dye and Silken Thread are sold by vendors. Before the Thick Leather Ammo Pouch step, 13 Cured Thick Hide have to be crafted at the trainer from Thick Hide and Deeprock Salt. Artisan needs 200 skill and a level 35 character, and Drakk Stonehand and Hahrana Ironhide also teach Nightscape Pants for the next step.

WoW Forever Leatherworking 225-300

WoW Forever Leatherworking 225-300 starts with an Artisan trainer recipe and then uses vendor and drop patterns that need no specialization. The route for the last 75 points is:

SkillRecipeCraftsReagentsRecipe Source
225-235Nightscape Pants~16Thick Leather (14), Silken Thread (4)Artisan Trainer
235-255Wicked Leather Gauntlets~21Rugged Leather (8), Black Dye (1), Rune Thread (1)Leonard Porter (Alliance) / Werg Thickblade (Horde)
255-280Heavy Scorpid Gauntlets~33Rugged Leather (6), Heavy Scorpid Scale (8), Rune Thread (1)Pattern drop: Blackrock Soldier (Burning Steppes)
280-290Wicked Leather Headband~30Rugged Leather (12), Black Dye (1), Rune Thread (1)Pattern drop: Jadefire Trickster (Felwood)
290-295Runic Leather Headband~8Rugged Leather (14), Runecloth (10), Rune Thread (1)Jase Farlane (Eastern Plaguelands)
295-300Heavy Scorpid Helm~8Rugged Leather (8), Heavy Scorpid Scale (12), Cured Rugged Hide (1), Rune Thread (1)Zannok Hidepiercer (Silithus)

The vendor patterns for Wicked Leather Gauntlets, Runic Leather Headband, and Heavy Scorpid Helm are sold in limited stock, so buy them early in case another Leatherworker buys them before you. Zannok Hidepiercer sells the Heavy Scorpid Helm pattern for 2 gold and 50 silver. Heavy Scorpid Gauntlets and Wicked Leather Headband come from pattern drops, so check the Auction House if the mobs do not drop them. Tribal Leatherworking players can use Frostsaber Boots from Qia in Everlook for the 255-280 step in place of Heavy Scorpid Gauntlets, as both recipes stay orange until 270 skill. Before the last step, craft 4 Cured Rugged Hide from Rugged Hide and Refined Deeprock Salt next to a Tanning Rack, since each craft makes two hides and Heavy Scorpid Helm needs one per craft.

Reaching 300 also takes a lot of gold for leather if you don’t skin it yourself. Our WoW Forever Leatherworking service raises your skill to the level you choose, up to 300, with all materials included in the order, so the patterns you own become usable, and you can craft your own leather and mail gear and armor kits right away.

WoW Forever Best Leatherworking Recipes

WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide

The best Leatherworking recipes in WoW Forever are the new 300 helms, crafted tier pieces, and armor kits, because they stay useful at level 60. Most of the new helms need Fel Leather, Pristine Scale, and several Cured Rugged Hide, so they need more materials than the leveling recipes. Here are the most valuable WoW Forever Leatherworking recipes at level 60:

Several of these recipes depend on Blackrock Depths, since Plugger Spazzring also sells the Black Dragonscale Breastplate pattern there. Our WoW Forever Blackrock Depths run clears the dungeon for you, which saves time if you are farming Thorium Brotherhood materials or patterns.

WoW Forever Merchant’s Favor Leatherworking Recipes

WoW Forever Merchant’s Favor Leatherworking recipes are sold by Daniel Stitchsong of the Azeroth Commerce Authority in Three Corners, Redridge Mountains. Horde players buy them from Pawani of Durotar Supply and Logistics outside the Crossroads in The Barrens. You earn Merchant’s Favor by filling Waylaid supply crates and turning them in at the trade camp. The price of a recipe depends on its tier:

Merchant’s FavorReputationSkillExamples
30None60-125Brawler’s Leather Belt, Trapper’s Leather Hood, Wisdom’s Leather Hood
60Friendly175-210Prowler’s Leather Gloves, Forceful Thick Armor Kit, Warden’s Leather Shoulders
90Honored225-250Mystic Rugged Armor Kit
1,000None300Leatherworking Certification

The 30 Merchant’s Favor tier covers all six role sets, so you can start buying useful leveling gear at 60 skill. Some hood patterns also drop in dungeons, such as Brawler’s Leather Hood from Lady Sarevess in Blackfathom Deeps. Granny Finespindle in Ironforge is another recipe vendor, and she sells Pattern: Stalker’s Leather Belt without any reputation requirement.

Read more about Merchant’s Favor and supply crates in our Azeroth Commerce Authority Reputation Guide.

Leatherworking Legacy Perks in WoW Forever

WoW Forever Leatherworking Guide

Leatherworking Legacy perks in WoW Forever speed up skill gains, and the profession also gives Legacy Points through three challenges. You get one point for reaching 150, 225, and 300 Leatherworking for the first time on your account, so a single Artisan Leatherworker earns three Legacy Points. Three Legacy perks affect Leatherworking:

  • Working Overtime: it raises the chance to gain a skill point from any primary, secondary, or class tradeskill by 4% per rank, so all 5 ranks give 20%.
  • Dedicated Study: this perk adds 1 skill point to your lowest primary or secondary profession once every 23 hours. Once both primaries and all three secondaries are at 300, it gives 2 to 4 random Elemental Essences.
  • Field Guide: its three ranks cut the shared cooldown on placing camp objects by up to 25%, so you can set up a new Tanning Rack sooner.

Read more about Legacy Points and perks in our WoW Forever Legacy System Guide.
