Whew, this one is a doozy. Inscription allows you to craft lots of unique items, each of which might require a separate explanation to give even just a general idea of what the hell this is.
In Dragonflight, you get to create glyphs, missives, trinkets, profession books, contracts, runes, sigils, mysteries, profession equipment, magic weapons, Darkmoon Cards and even cosmetics for your dragon mount. As you can see, the amount of items on display is staggering. Though, what exactly you'd be crafting, at least at the beginning, will depend on your skill points distribution into various specializations.
We’d be staying here all day trying to explain all of it. So, to keep things simple, Inscription lets you create various items that either directly buff the player character or help them in some other unorthodox way. And it’s also a way to craft some neat-looking cosmetics for yourself, and now, your dragon.
There’s no such thing as a “completely useless profession” as each and every one of them has it's role to play. In the case of Inscription, it’s especially valuable among the max level players, whether they’re looking for missives to improve their legendary gear or glyphs to just look cooler.
It might be worth mentioning that Inscription is perhaps one of the most difficult crafting professions to learn and make sense of, though. It’s also noticeably pricier to level up, compared to other WoW professions. If you like a challenge, it’s a unique and interesting profession to take. But if you’re a starting player or looking for something more streamlined, it might be better to choose from other primary professions.
It's always difficult to answer when people ask about best professions, since the answer is rarely clear cut. That being said, Inscription actually promises to be very good and profitable in the new expansion!
Now, of course, we can’t promise everything: the success of Inscription will largely depend on the success of the whole reworked profession system overall. But so far, the community seems pleased with the changes made, which might just mean that it’d be Inscription’s time to shine!
The most obvious are missives, which let you improve and customize crafted gear. They were already good before, perhaps even the most valuable service scribes had to offer. And now that crafted gear will allegedly be on par with raid and mythic loot, there’ll likely be lots of people wishing to upgrade their equipment, especially at the beginning of the expansion.
Another potentially valuable item for gold is Profession Specialization books, which can be used once a week to get 1 point of knowledge. Profession overhaul is one of the major Dragonflight selling points, so at least at the start, the players will definitely be looking for every possible way to boost their profession progression. And if things will go smoothly, these books might let you make profit in the long run as well.
And also, there’s the cosmetics. Glyphs were part of the Inscription toolkit for quite a while, but now you’d also be able to customize your own dragon. Given that only these new dragons can utilize the new flight mechanics, it’s fair to say that most players will be using them rather than their old mounts. And since players have only a very limited bunch of dragon presets to choose from, it also wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine that many players would want to make their dragon look unique. That’s where scribes come in.
Despite being rather specific, Inscription is actually known to be quite a gold-maker! Some of the most profitable items include Darkmoon Cards, Glyphs and gear inscriptions. But as we mentioned above, Dragonflight gives Inscription even more opportunities to make a buck on the Auction House. It’s hard to say just how profitable the profession will be in the future, but at least at the start of the expansion, scribes will likely make lots of money from their craft.
Herbalism will be your second profession of choice, since herbs serve as your main crafting material. Well, more accurate would be to say that scribes use ink, but milling herbs make ink, so the point still stands.
If you have a reliable source of herbs, you can choose Alchemy, Enchanting and Tailoring as your second profession. The first also uses herms as its prime materials and the other two are self-sufficient enough on their own. Buy our wow professions boosts if you need help leveling any of them up.
Inscription was added to the game all the way back in 2008 with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
