They don’t offer much in terms of rewards, too challenging to casually do with friends and don’t offer that much in terms of story. However, if you desire the mightiest challenge this game has to offer or just want other players to admire your incredible skill, then they are exactly what you’re looking for!

Generally, you can divide Final Fantasy 14 raids into these 5 categories, based on their difficulty:

• Normal Raids
• Alliance Raids
• Extreme Raids
• Savage Raids
• Ultimate Raids

However, it’s worth mentioning that Alliance Raids are actually comparable to Normal Raids in terms of the difficulty of the encounters. Rather than saying that they’re harder, it’d be more accurate to say that they’re just more complex due to the involvement of 24 players instead of the usual 8. 

If we were to grossly oversimplify it, Ultimate and Savage raids are not that different — neither in content, nor the rewards. For all intents and purposes, Ultimates are pretty much the same as Savages, just dialed up to the eleven. 

But this is where all the differences between them hide. Ultimate Raids aren’t just Savage Raids with bigger numbers — no, the whole fight feels completely different. Ultimate raids:

• Give bosses new moves
• Greatly increase the speed of all the attacks
• Bosses attack constantly and relentlessly
• Obligatory damage increase
• Increase the duration of the whole fight with additional phases

In short, if Savage Raid still feels like your typical MMORPG raid, Ultimate raids are more akin to a bullet hell, where a single mistake can cause a wipe of the entire party.

Well, for starters, Ultimate raids are quite literally the hardest content you can find in all FF 14. Many would even argue that they go a step above the endgame content of other games, such as WoW Mythic raids. Though it’s also worth mentioning that the two experiences are different enough where the direct comparison won’t be quite accurate. 

The thing about Ultimate raids is that they are rather predictable, but require pin-point execution. Think of it as performing a choreographed dance — the moves are the same no matter how many times you will be trying to do it, but you have to do the whole piece in one go or go back to the very beginning if you screw up. In case of Ultimate raids, this can go for 15-20 minutes in a row. As many players say, “it’s not a sprint — it’s a marathon”. 

In conclusion: yes, Ultimate raids are pretty hard or to better put it — demanding. You must have a great understanding of your role, perfect knowledge of the boss phases and have enough patience and skill to go through all of them. As long as you know what you have to do and can do it consistently, you’ll be able to complete the challenge. But for most, it’ll require countless hours, days, weeks, and even months of failed attempts and frustration. That is, unless you make use of our final fantasy xiv Ultimate runs.

Ultimate Raids is one of the most prestigious achievements a FF XIV player can acquire. And the rewards are very much supposed to accentuate that. The most notable rewards are the title you get for completing the Ultimate Raid, as well as the weapons you can get in exchange for Ultimate totems you get in reward. But instead, their main function is the bragging rights! Carrying one of these weapons around would let everyone know that you managed to beat the Ultimate Raid. And this is arguably what these raids all about  — proof of your skill and widespread recognition! 

While every Ultimate Raid has its own unique mechanics and devious tricks it’s pulling off on the players, there’s little to share about all of them in general and going into details is worthy of a separate guide. Mechanically, Ultimate Raids aren’t that much different from your usual raid in FF14. If we were to describe Ultimate Raids in the most consice way, perhaps the term “Boss Rush” would fit the best. 

In every Ultimate Raid, you’d be fighting one boss right after another, sometimes even changing the arena and rarely with any time to lick your wounds between the encounters. These raids pile up pretty much every move any boss have from all their possible encounters and then add some more on top of it. The Bosses attack relentlessly as well, constantly following up one attack with another or even overlapping them. While you still should to read the guides before going into the battle, to avoid being stuck on some of the tricks the fights pull off, the man challenge lies in your mechanical skills to ensure that you survive all the incoming attacks while still performing your role of Healer, Tank or DPS.

The answer depends on the raid in question. Some raids have no checkpoints, others have one. Lately, developers were even experimenting with multiple checkpoints. The question is rather contagious among the community as one side argues that it lowers the overall difficulty of the fight, while others think that it just helps to cut down on the tedium. However, older raids haven’t been updated to fit with this “new direction”. So, long story short, the amount of checkpoints is varied from one raid to another.

FFXIV weekly reset takes place every Tuesday at 12am PST/3am EST/8am GMT, etc. Consequently, this is when the Ultimate Raids reset as well.

There are some nuances, but in essence, you just have to beat the related Savage raid first. Which, in turn, unlocked by beating the raid on Normal first. In other words, it’s a pretty straightforward and linear progression system. You beat Normal Raids, then Savage Raids, then, finally, Ultimate Raids, proving each time that you’re ready to tackle the more difficult challenge. So, if you were hoping that your high-level friends can help you get into the Ultimate Raid and get the revered weapons, tough luck. Even we can’t do it. However, what we can do is take your character and push them through each difficulty level or even help you along the whole journey as trusty comrades!

For all intents and purposes, Ultimate raids are not necessary for completion. You don’t have to do them to complete the main story, nor do you need them to get the best gear. The game makes it clear that Ultimate Raids are first and foremost for the players seeking the ultimate challenge, no pun intended, above everything else. 

That being said, completing them isn’t pointless either. The raids can feature interesting bits of lore or even intriguing implications for the future events. On a practical side of things, you technically get the BiS gear in the game. But most importantly, you get the memories of these spectacular fights, the achievement to remember them by and the rights to brag about your victories to all other FFXIV players! 

Here are some general recommendations we can give you to help you get through the Ultimate Raids:

1. Get the BiS gear for your class or at least cap the item level requirement - this is not an ultimate challenge for nothing!
2. Know your role and your jobs - no matter what role you perform and what jobs you use to do it, you must get the most out of them for your team!
3. Study the boss phases, attacks, patterns and mechanics beforehand - knowing when and what to do is half the battle!
4. Discuss tactics with your group - Ultimate Raid bosses are relentless and don’t give time even for basic coordination. Better to talk out who does what beforehand, as well as alternate compositions and rotations in case something goes south.
5. Grab your potions, pots and food! Consumables are easy to overlook, but they just may save your life in the heat of the battle!
6.  Have an experienced group - it’s one thing if you’re playing with a group of friends. But if you’re planning to play with strangers, look for the experienced and dedicated static group - decreases the chances of easily avoidable mistakes and people leaving the party. 
7. Go into battle with a right set of mind - expect to have your memory, reflexes and patience tested. If you’re starting to feel tired, frustrated and feel that you’re starting to do more and more mistakes, it might be time to take a break and come back later!

This largely depends on your end goal. If you want to achieve victory without any outside help, then follow the tips we’ve left above - the journey will still be a long and tough one, but you’ll be able to cut the time on easily avoidable mistakes.
